Brazil's Senate has voted to remove President Dilma Rousseff from office for manipulating the budget.

It puts an end to the 13 years in power of her left-wing Workers' Party. Ms Rousseff had denied the charges.

Sixty-one senators voted in favour of her dismissal and 20 against, meeting the two-thirds majority needed to remove her from the presidency.

Michel Temer has been sworn in as president and will serve out Ms Rousseff's term until 1 January 2019.

..

Ms Rousseff lost the impeachment battle but won a separate Senate vote that had sought to ban her from public office for eight years.

Pledging to appeal against her dismissal, she told her supporters: "I will not say goodbye to you. I am certain I can say: 'See you soon.'"

She added: "They have convicted an innocent person and carried out a parliamentary coup."

COUP

Elites in Brazil don't like to see a woman in the presidency , blacks in universities , same-sex couples having the right to marry .

The coup is misogynist . The coulp is homophobic . The coup is racist. And it serves to propagate the culture of prejudice and violence.

I am Brazilian and I am devastated by the death of democracy in my country.

Well, I don't really know the situation there in Brazil. I can just hope this is for the better. If she was guilty then she better pay for her crimes.

I hope Brazil has a democratic election.

Kindness rules all.

Well, it's not a coup in legal terms, only in political ones. The constitutional (and legal) list of the actions which can justify an impeachment is so wide that basically anything can fit into it, seen through the right perspective.

That's a dangerous intitutional weapon that's been in the hands of the brazilian congress since the 50's, but rarely put to use. Our former president had no control over the congress in her second term, mainly due to allowing the federal police to proceed with the investigations on the corruption scandal involving the state-owned oil company Petrobras. Half of the congressmen is in trouble with judicial authorities right now, so they saw the **** coming their way and kicked her out, because she didn't agree to stop the police and save their asses.

On the coup's description as mysoginistic/homophobic/racist: those were not its main reasons, but will most likely be some of its consequences, due to the mostly conservative congress we have now. And make no mistake: the bigots that occupy those seats were democratically elected, let's not pretend our society is not exactly like them.

To sum it up: politics in Brazil have always been a gentlemen club, and will continue to be so, now that investigations will probably be quelled by the new president (the former vice president, who has built a major alliance in congress for his "salvation government"). The possibility our legislative has of greatly interfering with executive governance was never not a means of ensuring democratic control over a historically abusive executive, as it was sold to us as of the enactment of our current constitution in '88. It is a mere safety valve which can be triggered by the political establishment to preserve itself.

Rocket Number 9

Coup my ass :neyde:

They are taking away a shitty president for a even shittier. Way to go Brazil, now the only thing we have to deal with is the lack of Jobs, inflation and recession (Thanks Dilma!)

Almost forgot: we still have to deal with conservative Christian parties and PMDB. Can anyone buy me a ticket to Europe please?

I'm not Brazilian so I am not entirely familiar with the politics down there, but it's very interesting to read everyone's opinions and insights about this.
