Teal Ambition 47,805
A shallow magnitude-6.2 earthquake struck central Italy early Wednesday morning, though it was not immediately clear how widespread any damage may be. The earthquake struck just after 3:30 a.m. local time about 6 miles from the small town of Norcia, according to the US Geological Survey. Norcia is located about 100 miles northeast of Rome and 62 miles from Perugia, the capital of the Umbria region. The quake was shallow, striking at a depth of just over 6 miles, the USGS reported. Initial modeling suggested the shaking could produce extensive damage and casualties, though in the immediate aftermath little information was available. A 4.6 magnitude aftershock struck the region about 20 minutes after the initial quake. A second aftershock 5.5 magnitude struck a half hour after. At least 37 people have died and 150 are still missing after a shallow magnitude-6.2 earthquake struck central Italy early Wednesday morning, the civil protection agency said. A spokesperson for Italy’s civil protection agency told NBC 17 of the deaths were in Amatrice, 11 in Accumoli, and 9 in Arquata.
