Majority of Germans against EU-Turkey refugee deal

Most Germans think the European Union should scrap a landmark migration deal with Turkey and scupper negotiations on its accession to the bloc, according to a poll published on Sunday.

The deal, agreed by Ankara in exchange for the revival of financial aid, the promise of visa-free travel to much of the EU for Turkish citizens and accelerated EU membership talks, has sharply cut the number of refugees entering Europe via eastern routes.

Last year Germany took in around 1.1 million people fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and beyond, far more than any other EU state, creating conditions that have led to a rise in social and political tensions in Europe's powerhouse economy.

But the Emnid survey for German weekly Bild am Sonntag showed 52 percent were in favour of the migration deal being terminated, compared with 35 percent who wanted it to continue.

More than two thirds of the 502 people surveyed on August 4 also wanted an immediate freeze of aid payments to Turkey, and 66 percent wanted the EU accession talks entirely broken off.

Under the migration pact, Ankara agreed to take back all migrants and refugees, including Syrians who cross by sea to Greece illegally.

The reciprocal visa-free access has been delayed due to a dispute over Turkish anti-terrorism legislation and concern in the West about the scale of Ankara's crackdown following a failed coup.

I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it.

"Under the migration pact, Ankara agreed to take back all migrants and refugees, including Syrians who cross by sea to Greece illegally." WRONG

Under the migration pact, Turkey takes refugees that passed the border illegally and sends the same number of refugees that were already documented in Turkey... Turkey does not take all refugees.

"The reciprocal visa-free access has been delayed due to a dispute over Turkish anti-terrorism legislation and concern in the West about the scale of Ankara's crackdown following a failed coup."

This is the funniest part of all. Turkey is the only secular mostly muslim populated nation in the whole middle east. Members of a religious sect led by us based cleric Fethullah Gulen tried to do a coup d'état. (Gulen is considered as a CIA asset) Now Turkey purges all government/military officials related to Gulen, and west worries. This tells a lot about motives of Europe and US I think... They want secular democracy in the world ??? Fight against Terror... All seems like a joke at this moment. Let's not forget that EU officials were allowing PKK to do public propaganda in EU capitals such as Brussels, in case you do not know PKK is a terrorist organization consisting of terrorists who like to explode themselves in city squares for freedom.

Coming back to the discussion of refugee deal. Cancelling the deal can only worsen the situation for EU. Why ? In this deal, EU takes back already documented refugees and get rid of undocumented refugees. Also Turkey blocked sea routes to Greece with this deal. According to Frontex, the number of migrants and refugees arriving in Greece has dropped by a staggering 90% with this deal. If the deal is out, Turkey will not block sea routes and will send back all undocumented refugees it took back.

EUROPE DOES NOT GIVE FINANCIAL AID TO TURKEY. Turkey is currently 3rd biggest spender of humanitarian aid worldwide after US and UK. EU sends money for projects relating refugees, it is not a financial aid but humanitarian contribution.

Turkey is likely to stop EU accession talks itself. Recent polls show that nearly 70% of turkish population is against accession to EU. Under the light of recent developments, Turkey is more likely to legalize capital punishment in order to execute government and military officials serving religious sects. Legalization of capital punishment will end the accession talks anyways.

A personal view of mine, I think Turkey will become more closer with Shanghai pact rather than EU since Turkey and Russia are in reconciliation currently.

It if it was for Atatürk, no religious sect could cease to exist so there would not be any need for this sort of purge. But considering what happened, Atatürk would be glad to see all sect-affiliated officials gone. Off with their head.

Atatürk was a champion of enlightenment but  he had no mercy for those who were against enlightenment so I was serious about off with their head part.

He would also chop off Erdogan and AKP-facists head too.

He would do that to pre-failed coup Erdogan. But since the failed coup, Erdogan seems to change a bit.

First of all, Erdogan took back all libel cases he failed against people. And second of all, he is unbelievably unifying. Couple months ago, he was the most divisive figure I have seen, now he is like hugging everyone with his words.

That's sounds surprisingly close like a person who ****ed up europe 80 years ago.

Unifying isn't always positive. Especially when you jail journalists who criticize him.

Not The Real Gaga

Every country which has some selfrespect should break this whole nosence deal. Erdogan is a dictator, and the majority of the Turkish people voted for him and still support him. Turkey doesn't respect human rights, democratic values and standards and is one of the worst countries on our continent right now. You can't trust them.

This whole refugee-deal doesn't make any sense, because if Europe would work together, we could handle it easily without the help of Turkey. Turkey is playing with the EU and that has to stop!

And it is better if Turkey doesn't join the EU: more Islam in Europe is one of the worst things that could happen these days.

The survey only included 502 people.... not even close to being enough to write an article like this.

If a researcher uses a wide range of different people, it is still good enough to use. But, of course how bigger the test sample, how better and more representative a research is.

1- That no sense deal keeps undocumented immigrants away from Europe. See frontex's data about it.

2- We all know how countries play with democratic values as they wish. US protects an islamic threat(Fethullah Gulen) to Turkey's secular democracy in its own country.  Belgium allows PKK to exist in its country because PKK specifically sends suicide bombers to Turkey. Lovely democracy...

3- Turkey is the 3rd biggest humanitarian spender of whole world after US and UK.
Watch this for an example
You really think Europe knows how to handle refugees or humanitarian aid ?

4- Let's settle this down, EU train is already gone for Turkey. It is about protecting the international political balances. Nobody wants sudden shifts that would have drastic impacts.

Turkey threatens Kurdish people. And i wouldn't call erdogan the most democracy loving person as well.

Also some article about "secular Turkey"

14 journalists. Let's count them down:

Hatice Duman: Member of Marxist–Leninist Communist Party. Do not get the wrong idea that MLCP is an actual political party, it is underground hoxhaist party. In 2016, this party created a block with some other armed far leftist organizations.

Mustafa Gök: Member of DHKP-C. A far left organization carrying suicide bombings etc. DHKP-C is also designated as a terrorist organization by US and EU.

Seyithan Akyüz: Supporter of PKK. PKK is designated as a terrorist organization by many organizations including US, EU etc etc. PKK operates with actions of urban / mountain guerrilla fighting and suicide bombings.

Kenan Karavil: Illegal propaganda of PKK.

Erdal Süsem: Illegal propaganda of far leftist terrorist organizations like Maoist Communist Party, DHKP-C.

Mehmet Baransu: Arrested for being member of Fethullah Gulen's sect that was the organization behind fail coup d'état in which soldiers killed 200 civilians which is unbelievable. During previous coup d'états of Turkey, no soldier fired their gun to a civilian because coups of Turkey were always supported by civilians to restore the order.

Mohammed Ismael Rasool: Turkey-based Iraqi. Aiding PKK.

14 guy is taking too much time.

You got an idea.

1. We still have to deal with undocumented immigrants and it hasn't solved anything at all. Turkey still wants visa-free travelling opportunities for its people. So, we get the same amount (of even more) Turkish people back in the end of the whole ride. Nobody wants that.

2. You're right about that, those things are crooked as hell. But it still isn't that bad as the current situation in Turkey, especially looking to the status of their democracy.

3. Humanitarian help is not always a case of pure goodwill, it is also a way of enlarging your influence in a specific territory. And a politician, who fires a lot of judges, because they don't fit in his big picture, doesn't know a lot about the trias politica. Even reintroducing the death pannel, to get your political enemies out of the way, is in no single way good, allowed and humanitarian.

4. The negotiations between the European Union and Turkey are still going on. The EU is too weak to cancel the whole accession process immediately, because they are are dependent on Turkey for that stupid refugee-deal, which they don't want to lose. The EU is a political body, which want to go on with conversations, to keep their current relationship and stable position in the whole field.
