PETA: Pokémon Go is animal cruelty

PETA isn't suggesting that playing Pokemon GO is the equivalent of abusing animals though... To suggest that is a misrepresentation of what they are saying.

"PETA trusts in players’ ability to understand that Pokémon aren’t real, so no animals are in danger from the game. But it would be wonderful if Nintendo could leverage the passion that people have for fictional Pokémon to help real-life captive animals, such as the orcas imprisoned at SeaWorld or the tigers who live behind bars in the Ringling Bros. circus."

They are literally just saying that the premise of Pokemon, capturing pokemon and making them fight isn't so different from what happens in real life when people capture animals and put them in zoos, circuses and places where they get abused.

PETA start their post saying

"Many PETA staffers grew up playing Pokémon and are impressed by the Pokémon Go phenomenon. We saw this as a teachable moment for how people should treat real animals."

They end their post saying

"So next time you’re about to capture a wild Pokémon, pause and think, “What can I do to help animals who are being held captive?”"

They are just using the phenomenon of Pokemon Go to have a discussion about the real life problems with animal welfare. They are not denouncing Pokemon Go as a moral evil or equating it to animal cruelty.

It's really not an unreasonable statement or position from PETA whatsoever. It's just a way to engage more people and highlight their positions on the unethical treatment of animals.

Of course they are going to be seen as dumb when people keep misrepresenting what they are saying and doing

This thread is about how PETA has equated Pokemon Go with animal cruelty, obviously you don't care that this isn't PETA's position and are happy to continue spreading misinformation about what PETA are doing.

I don't always agree with the methods of PETA, but they are most likely the world’s largest animal rights group in the world, and certainly the most well-known. Their message is important and worth spreading.

In this case they have done nothing wrong and seem pretty reasonable.

They do make a fair point though. Like, obviously Pokemon GO is an innocent game, but the fundamental idea behind it is about capturing wild creatures. That kind of thing happens in the real world, and real creatures are harmed from it.

By all means, keep playing the game. It's harmless fun, obviously. Just some food for thought about comparisons to the harsh realities of the real world.

They did what? Say Pokemon Go is animal cruelty?

No, they very clearly didn't...

That is the statement by PETA that the article is written about.

What have I written that you think is a mess? All I have done is point out you are misrepresenting PETA... I think your clear bias against this group is a huge mess imo

I would have agreed with them if Pokemon were real and I also admit that humans' fascination with games like Pokemon is worth looking into, but it's moments like these that PETA makes people who fight for animal rights seem like a joke. Ugh. it's just a game, chill. :noparty:

EDIT: Actually, they're not condemning Pokemon GO but rather reminding us of parralels between a virtual game and reality and how we should be aware of that. Misleading thread title, IMO.

I am also a vegan but I'm not ridiculously delusional and stupid.

Are you saying the comparison isn't accurate?

Because, if that's what your saying then the second part of your statement has some issues.
