Oxfam Slams Wealthy Nations For Refugee Neglect

"The world's six wealthiest countries host less than 9% of the world's refugees, according to a new Oxfam report.

While the United States, China, Japan, Germany, France and UK make up more than half the global economy, last year they only hosted 2.1 million refugees and asylum seekers -- just 8.88% of the world's total, the aid organization said in its report released Monday."

Meanwhile, some of the poorest nations (Oxfam refers to Jordan, Turkey, Pakistan, Lebanon, South Africa and Palestine as the most important examples) are "shouldering the duty of protecting refugees when it should be a shared responsibility".

Isn't the GDP always used to judge the health of a nation's economy though? So that would still point to the direction of those countries being the wealthiest overall.

I think GDP per capita would be a better measure of the health of a nation's economy. Even then, there are other factors, like the Gini coefficient and debt, that would need to be taken into account to paint a full picture.

The most surprising part of this article is how they blame Japan. Disregarding the fact that their GDP per capita has fallen a quarter in the last five years, it's one of the worst countries to seek refuge. I can't think of a major country more ethnically homogeneous and culturally hermetically sealed.

GDP simply refers to the size of an economy thats it.

 

Theres Nations like India and China who are not considered developed and the economies are still developing and are pretty poor.

 

But because they have over 1 Billion people the total GDP is large

 

Norway is one of the worlds most prosperous Nations but with only 5 million people it doesnt even make top 20

 

India will soon surpass Canadas economy... India has 30X the population of Canada

 

Canada has a GDP Per Capita of $60,000 more or less... India only needs a GDP per Capita of $2000 to catch up to Canada

Japanese are very polite, honorable and kind people

 

But their cultural weakness is xenophobia. They do not like foreigners in their country

 

 Bad attittude for a country that has a desperate need for immigrants given they have the worst demographic charts in the world

 

They also have by far the largest Debt to GDP ratio. They need the economy to grow in order to help get ratio down...

 

Instead they have on and off deflation and theyve had 4 recessions since the 2008 financial crisis

Are they really wealthy though.

Many unemployment happening in USA and UK at least. How do we let people in when the government can't feed their own citizens first and foremost? That is irresponsible thing to do.

As for China, they hosted enough people already, 1 billion+++ of them, no place left there. Plus the mutual rift with Uighur ethnic, don't think it is safe for refugee to go there

Imo the european countries have taken more than enough but it's the east asian countries that need to step up their game. Japan and korea are some of the most developed countries in the world but both have decline populations straining their economies and china is not far behind from face the same fate despite having over 1 billion people. Very honorable and nice people in those countries but they are extremely xenophobic

Disagree.. Japanese and Korean culture simply isn't welcoming to refugees and migrants. Very nationalist, no post-WW2 sensitivity, big cultural differences in work. As a migrant you would not feel comfortable in Korea or Japan. Way too ethnically homogenous. Literally no diversity.

Unemployment is low in the UK and US right now (<5%). Also, there's a big difference between not having enough money to pay for a 200k medication for your citizens and not having enough money for food for your citizens. The latter one is not the case. Americans have great luxury and could still meet their basic needs, even if 880% of their income was taken away.

As for China: no country is actually full. There's only one full country in the world and that's Bangladesh. The Netherlands, third most densily populated in the world, has only 10% built on. 90% can still be used. China is three times less densily populated. Enough room in the ghost cities on the outskirts of Beijing.

 

 

Back on topic:

I prefer political stability over taking refugees. Refugees should only be accepted to the limits set by the people to avoid polarisation and conflict
