giskardsb 12,565
Obviously this doesn't apply to ALL pop fans, but quite a few of them. We see constant threads here comparing Gaga in various ways to various other pop figures, trying to compute "relevance", rankings, and who is the current king of the hill or queen on the throne. As far as I know this doesn't happen in any other genre, at least that I've ever been associated with. Sure you'll get arguments about why one artist is better than another, but not to the extent of what happens with Pop fans. Pop fans exhibit some of the worst possible behavior on the internet, simply because of this competitive need to make their pop star "win" and other pop stars "lose." So this is a legit question from me, because I don't understand it. How did Pop, a musical, artistic form, become a sporting event? Pop fans exhibit even worse behavior on social media than the most rabid sports fans. How does it get to the point where it's necessary to argue the finer details of "sales" vs "shipments" in order to ascertain that a particularly favorite pop star is somehow superior to another one? I wonder if this is a side effect of having too much information at our disposal, combined with social media and the fact that the pop industry itself measures itself on commercial metrics? For some reason fans have bought into commercial metrics as a measuring tool for pop star quality. It's maybe partly also the isolation of pop fans, as judging by averages many pop fans listen to little other than pop music. In any case, I don't remember rabid pop fans having it out pre-internet. Maybe it's an unfortunate consequence of mob behavior brought out by social media. To me absolutely nothing good comes from it, outside of possibly rabid fans spending more money on a pop star to try to boost their sales and ticket gross. If pop fans want the industry to remain successful they should support each other instead of tearing each other down. Besides not really helping the industry, it does nothing to dispel the notion held by nearly all non-pop fans that pop is superficial, without substance, and overly commercialized. Curious to hear your thoughts.

Some people pit fantasy football teams against each other, we pit pop stars against each other being competitive is just human nature Spoiler Even though a lot of stans are soooo extra when they don't need to be We like to think we're so different from the "normal" heteros and "weird" gays. I'm sure we'd get in bar fights with Dorito dust covered fingers over "Gaga vs. Katy" if we could 🌸Flourishing and vibrant🌼

Iwontell 7,312
I don't think all pop music fans are competitive, but I get what you mean. I think whenever ppl pick a certain thing (a band, a singer, a franchise, a political party, you name it) and use it to form their identities, any attack that thing suffers they feel as an attack on themselves...so they react accordingly. And everything else (comparing chart performance, net worth, tour grossing, etc., in pop music) is kind of a consequence of that behavior, even the constant complaining is a result of that (ppl want their faves to do well so they can feel better than the fans of whoever is the competition). It's the very same reason ppl fight over sports all the time...that's it: pop music is the gay version of the NFL! But, really, if you feel bothered by it, it's because some part of you is acting like that... ATTENTION: (bad) jokes and sarcasm are still a thing, so don't take everything I say literally. Thank you.

JustAnotherDay 8,402
I think that part of the reason pop fans do it in particular is because it is the biggest and most successful genre, with country fans it doesn't really matter because most of them don't have Super successful singles on the main charts but it's okay because they do well on country radio and on the country charts, but with pop it is a constant battle for who is the most relevant and who has the most top tens, top fives, and number ones was NickARTPOP

Thomas P 18,479
Honestly it's cuz the singer they Stan for represents themselves. Like when someone bashes Gaga or Beyoncé I get EXTREMELEY defensive and it's cuz when they are insulted, I feel insulted. It feels like because I love them, that the insult put on them is really directed towards me. It's unhealthy but it's the honest truth. I’m a simple guy to please, if you like Melodrama, we chill.
