What Are Your Favorite References Gaga Has Made?

Lady Gaga has been known to use cultural references in her work, such as Gaga's reference to 1920's silence film Metropolis in the Applause video, to Marina Abromovic's work with a scorpion attached to her head in the Venus promotional photograph. Her references can be rather distinct or the opposite, and can deepen the meaning of what she's actually trying to say.

Her music video with the most references is definitely Applause including Aphrodite, The Little Mermaid, Art Deco, Les Vampires (1915), etc.

My favorite has to be her influence(s) from the film Metropolis in this photoshoot shot by David Lachapelle:

Also in the Paparazzi music video.

this dress is so beautiful, I'm not sure what the painting is but it must be a reference to the painting

I've always been obsessed with her Mona Lisa outfit. There's just too many to choose. :lolga:

Are you forgetting her iconic Venus look with the guitar or her Mona Lisa look? :excuseu:

Her bible references, especially on her Judas MV.

OMG this topic could have me posting for hours! One that immediately comes to mind is the Meat Dress ... she is literally a walking re-creation of the classic 1924 painting 'Carcass of Beef' by Soutine.

I saw this painting myself (not a print, the original) in a traveling exhibit here in San Diego. As soon as I saw it, I thought... "that's Lady Gaga!!" ... I snapped the pic on the left and made this collage when I got home.

Amazing. The Meat Dress was so much more than people realize.

I loved the Salvador Dali reference in the FAME ad, too.
