Trump and Clinton tied in new national poll

Hillary Clinton and Donald J. Trump are deadlocked less than a month before the Democratic and Republican presidential conventions, according to a new national poll of registered voters that shows the American electorate feeling disappointed in each candidate.

A Quinnipiac University survey released on Wednesday found that 42 percent supported Mrs. Clinton while 40 percent backed Mr. Trump. The poll represents a slight improvement for Mr. Trump, who trailed by four points at the beginning of the month, and has a margin of error of plus or minus two percentage points.

Mrs. Clinton is the heavy favorite among women, black voters, Hispanics and younger voters. Mr. Trump leads with men, white voters and those who are over the age of 65.

Voters view Mr. Trump as being stronger on the economy and better suited to handle terrorism, while Mrs. Clinton is seen as more trusted by voters on immigration and handling international crises. Mrs. Clinton also gets higher marks when it comes to being prepared to be president and for her intelligence, but Mr. Trump beats her on leadership and honesty.

Irrelevant.

Compared to other polls, Trump scores the same values at around ~40.

It's Hillary that has lower numbers according to this poll, which makes no sense given all other polls show her rising.

The last Quinnipiac Poll had Hillary at 45 and Trump at 41 and it's the only pollster which has Hillary go down. Even Rasmussen and its heavy Republican bias shows no change.

How do you know the ABC News/Reuters ones aren't the outliers? The rest show a close race.

Ignoring the ABC News poll, the average is still 5 points which is not close as it's larger than the margin of error.

Also the point of polls isn't looking at discrete numbers. It's looking at rates of change.

Well the election is still 4 months away. I don't think 5 points is a substantial lead in this climate. Trump is over the Mexican judge disaster, and with his inexperienced campaign manager gone he is regaining momentum.

Of course. Nothing is set in stone at this point.

So why are we debating polls months ahead of time. For all I care, Hillary could have a 20 point lead and it doesn't mean anything. I'll start worrying about the national polls after the first debate. Swing state polls I understand the attention at this time, national polls not so much.
