(CNN) - Cars were set alight at a Western Australian mosque on Tuesday night as children prayed just meters away in what a local imam described as an "act of hate."

Vandals also scrawled "F*** Islam" on a wall outside the mosque in Thornlie, Perth, which is adjacent to the Australian Islamic College. Hundreds of local Muslims had gathered there for evening prayers.

Western Australian police confirmed four cars were set on fire using an accelerant. One of the vehicles had been completely destroyed in the blaze.

No one was injured in the attack.

Hatred breeds hate, it's only going to get worse now than terrorist attacks are occuring in Western countries.

This thread seems to be an endless well of depression already.

Let me go hide in a hole. Away from this dark earth.

It's factually incorrect to say "violence is getting worse," we have statistics to prove otherwise. Specially in America, Violante Crime rates have been steadily dropping since the 90's. Don't let the twenty four hour news cycle and internet make you feel otherwise.

As for violence in the context of our history as a species, it's also not getting worse. Here is a brilliant article by Steven Pinker explaining why what you said is an inaccurate. I'd check out his book on the subject as well.

Of course it would happen in Thornlie though :wtf:

It has a pretty poor reputation and has for a long time.  There is a lot of public housing and a high crime rate. It also has the highest population of Muslims in Perth (Although percentage wise they are still clearly a minority at around 4%).

I mean with the building tensions worldwide around immigration and an increase in paranoia and islamophobia it's awful and terrifying, yet not at all surprising, that a bunch of bogans in a low socioeconomic area would target a growing islamic population in the suburb.

So often people proclaim about how scary ISIS is and that they are worried about an attack by an Islamic extremist, but frankly I think it would be far more terrifying right now to be part of an islamic minority in western countries that are spreading fear about muslim people.

How come no-one listens to Lady Gaga? If everyone did we wouldn't be living in such a barbaric world. We need kindnesses and compassion more than ever.

My first thought was "how many people were killed?" ...then I remembered that Australia hasn't had a mass shooting in, what? 20 years? Not that all violent crimes involve guns, that's just what popped into my mind first

Glad no one was hurt. When will the breeding of hate against Muslims stop? :smh:

It really is though :ohno: but you rarely ever hear good news because it's the tragedies, attacks, murders, crimes, drug busts, celebrity scandals, etc etc that sell. No one will buy a magazine that says "with his cancer now cured, this puppy was adopted out to a loving home to live a long, happy life" but they'll buy one that says "woman, under the influence, maimed at dog fight after the vicious canines broke free of their restraints". It's just human nature to be morbidly curious and negative. A left over survival instinct.

Smut sells so that's all you ever hear :rip:

Spoiler

And don't forget, for every person that'll treat you like garbage, there's ten more that'll give you the shirt off of their back if you need it :yay:

It's all about statistics and perspective.

In the US specifically crime has decreased in the last decades. That is a fact.

BUT things like mass shootings have increased. This gets more media coverage. Just because we get news 24/7 about crime, it doesn't mean it has necessarily increased.

Terrorist attacks in the West have increased, this gets a lot of media coverage. We have a perception that the world as a whole is worse. Sometimes it's just a specific problem, such as terror cells that need to be addressed.

The human population has grown to 7.4 billion. A century ago it was in the billion range. We're doing relatively well with crime (in the US) for an increasing population and different international threats.

Can I say things are getting BETTER? I think it's more complicated. Regular crime such as murder, robbery, etc. is down but mass shootings and terrorism are up. I would say things are CHANGING.

However, do I feel relatively safe where I live? Yes.

Is the WORLD getting better? I don't know. Again, I think it is shifting. Countries like Honduras and Mexico are in 2016 plagued by increasing crime. Their perspective might be that the world has gone to **** while I can comfortably go to an ATM near my house without the immediate fear I will get robbed.
