The start of the #NoBilNoBreak Historic Sit-In Protest on Youtube below

Rep. John Lewis, one of the last living icons of civil disobedience during the civil rights movement, was leading a sit-in on the House floor Wednesday in an effort to force a vote on gun control.

"Now is the time for us to find a way to dramatize it, to make it real," Lewis, D-Ga., said. "We have to occupy the floor of the House until there is action."

Lewis and roughly 40 House Democrats stood briefly to recite the Pledge of Allegiance as a couple dozen visitors in the gallery looked on.

"No bill, no break," the Democrats chanted loudly before returning to the floor.

It is unusual for members to disrupt the functioning of the House to this degree.

If members do not leave the floor and no compromise is reached, it is largely up to Speaker Paul Ryan to decide whether to use the authority of the House to seek to clear the floor and/or sanction members, or to keep the House in recess and wait out the issue.

The protest is not being televised because the House has not formally gaveled into session. House members took to social media to lodge their protests using the hashtags #NoBillNoBreak, #NOMORESILENCE and #goodtrouble.

Goosey

Let them have their tantum. These fools are trying to pass laws that can take away peoples' constitutional rights without due process.

Several Republicans congressman criticized the sit-in as a political stunt.

"Calling this a sit-in is a disgrace to Woolworth's," Rep. Mark Walker of North Carolina tweeted. "They sat-in for rights. Dems are 'sitting-in' to strip them away."

Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan tweeted, "Democrats are staging a sit-in on the House floor. They refuse to leave until our Constitution replaces due process with secret lists."

I agree with Mr. Amash. Their little display disgusts me.

Do you know who blocked these measures from passing? It was the Democrats themselves!

There were four proposals up for vote on Monday, including Senate Amendment 4749. That amendment would have done exactly what the Democrats have been demanding for months: make it impossible for terrorists on the “terrorist watchlist” to purchase a firearm.

[T]he Attorney General may delay the transfer of the firearm or explosive for a period not to exceed 3 business days and file an emergency petition in a court of competent jurisdiction to prevent the transfer of the firearm or explosive, and such emergency petition and subsequent hearing shall receive the highest possible priority on the docket of the court of competent jurisdiction and be subject to the Classified Information Procedures Act (18 U.S.C. App.);

That’s exactly what the Democrats wanted, right? A law which would immediately prohibit known terrorists from purchasing firearms, and give the Attorney General discretion in who qualifies as a terrorist. The sole difference between this proposal and the ones the Democrats were backing is that in this version the Attorney General simply has to file a court order within three days to make the NICS denial permanent. Not obtain — file. That’s it. Any normal person would consider that to be a reasonable request.

When it came time for the vote, 53 members of the Senate agreed that this was a good idea. 47 disagreed. The full vote record is available here for the curious, but here’s the interesting fact:

Every single Democrat, with the exception of Donnelly (D-IN) and Manchin (D-WV), voted against this common sense gun control proposal.

In all the years I've been a Democrat, I have never seen us so united and fired up. Seriously, I have never been more proud to be a Democrat.
