Clinton breaks from Obama, calls Orlando attack 'radical Islamism'

Hillary Clinton on Monday broke from President Barack Obama in referring to the terrorist attack as "radical Islamism," countering Donald Trump's accusations that both she and Obama are weak on tackling terrorist threats.

In an interview with NBC's "Today" on Monday morning, Clinton said words matter less than actions, but that she didn't have a problem using the term.

"And from my perspective, it matters what we do, not what we say. It matters that we got Bin Laden, not what name we called him," Clinton said. "But if he is somehow suggesting I don't call this for what it is, he hasn't been listening. I have clearly said we face terrorist enemies who use Islam to justify slaughtering people. We have to stop them and we will. We have to defeat radical jihadist terrorism, and we will."

Both terms "mean the same thing," Clinton continued, adding, "And to me, radical jihadism, radical Islamism, I think they mean the same thing. I'm happy to say either, but that's not the point."

Clinton's comments on Monday mark an evolution for her. After the San Bernardino terrorist attack, Clinton in December said she was fine using "radical jihad" but was not fond of using the term "radical Islam."

Great. Give Trump and terrorist groups exactly what they wanted.

I agree with this though^ what we call it is irrelevant. How are we going to prevent it from happening again?

Spoiler

And no, a ban on Islam in the U.S. isn't an answer.

Radical Jihad just sounds like you're saying the same thing twice. Radical Islam incites jihad, so it isn't radical jihadists, it's radical Islamist in jihad. Either way, it's the same thing.

She said Islamism. Islamism is Islamic fundamentalism and militancy. It carries different connotations than Islam.

Not really, jihad actually means struggle. It has spiritual meaning too, as well as fighting in war against enemy.

"Holy war" is wrong translation, taken from the crusades.

Don't you dare to criticise Islam. #islamophobia

i hate people who say that Islamists are not Muslims. That totally goes wrong. Westoro church is still Christian, and radical Jewish settlers are still Jewish, and so are Islamists being Muslims.

All the religion are not a homogenous.

I think you're misunderstanding what they meant. It doesn't sound like they mean all of Islam is bad. But the people who carry out stuff like this still follow it. In the wrong way, yes but they still claim to be part of the religion. And by the way criticism against a religion is not the same as islamophobia. All religions have flaws.

The point is Islamism is Islam but Islam is not Islamism.

But to call someone an islamophobe for not making a distinction in terminology? The people carrying out these acts probably don't make that distinction. They're still using the religion for bad purposes.

Right which is why I said Islamism is Islam.

Criticizing Islamism is not Islamophobic because it is criticizing the radical fundamentalism taking root and the militant culture that permeates throughout Islamic society.

However it is Islamophobic to paint all Muslims with the same brush because Islam is not Islamism. The overwhelming majority do not support fundamentalism and militancy.

There is still an issue where they do not actively work to oppose it either though, but that's not the point.

I don't actually see a problem in her using this. There is a difference between Islam and Islamism. I think she was right in saying this.
