The Monster Purge

By releasing an album full of Jazz covers, going on tour for it, becoming a regular in tribute performances, announcing a clothing line for dogs (what happened with that?), racing in cars, riding her horse to the market, and now again, planning to release another Jazz album, it's easy for one to wonder...  is Gaga trying to get rid of some of her fans? 

Some of us have already thought it in the past that a Monster Purge is happening, and with this thread, 

It can seem that Gaga wasn't that pleased with the current state of her fan base. It seems that she's trolling*ahem* I mean cleansing her fans, while at the same time, gaining new ones from the GP. Do you think she is?

 

Do you think a Monster Purge is happening? Or is she just losing fans unintentionally? I think it's an idea worth discussing. As a stan, how are you holding up, my dear? Do you think your stan card can survive longer?

This might be a delusional reach but it has truths to it. Gaga has lost fans over the past three years, and those who remain sadly has little faith left for her (which, I don't blame them for, tbh). I think Gaga's just doing what she wants. Lastly, stay gay!

At one point (maybe during BTW or pre-BTW) didn't Gaga explicitly say in an interview that only true fans would withstand some thing that was about to happen? 

Maybe she was just a few years too early in her announcement of the Monster purge

Hopefully, if she does get a new fanbase, it's one that will support her and at the same time constructively criticize her mistakes and not be entitled little managers who drag her almost just as much as her haters do

I think the interview might have been just before Judas was released and Gaga was all about this "cultural baptism" that was going to happen bc I'm pretty sure she thought everyone was going to tear into her for being political on the album and she assumed only real fans would stay. If only she knew the mess that laid ahead of her post-BTW

However I don't think she'd ever set out to intentionally, by which I mean, consciously, 'purge' her fanbase. 

I think this is instead a matter of perspective. 

You imply she is calculatingly, cunningly taking a different approach which affects her life, culture, career, health and overall happiness, simply to eliminate the attention of people who supposedly love her. 

The more realistic answer is that she is taking a different approach, because it's what she wants to do. She is diverse, limitlessly creative, and extremely ambitious. When some 'monsters' come crying because of this approach, lament the old days, mourn her earlier approach to life and music, you cannot seriously try and pin it on her. I would be more inclined to suggest that these fame mourners are so unhappy with her current happiness (not implying they don't want to see her happy, but you get the point), that they would rather love to believe she is trying to 'purge' them from her, instead of taking responsibility and seeing that they are actually excluding themselves. 

It is incredibly vanity, incredibly audacity, to suggest that because Gaga is not doing what some of these 'monster's want her to be doing, that she is not only doing it in spite of them, but that she is deliberately trying to push people away who claim to adore her. 

Now, you said that Gaga has lost fans over the past three years. Who hasn't? She's gained many new ones as well, something, might I add, that people claiming to be true 'monsters', should be happy about. I certainly am glad that people are starting to finally see how great she is. You also so sombrely put that 'those who remain, sadly have little faith left for her.' Not only is this entirely untrue, but an aspersion only cast to the few very loud, very prolific people, who declare it based on, from what I can see, a lack of solid evidence for the paranoid claims they make about her new direction and her life, some maybe because they want to expect the worst so that they can enjoy the best even better (sad really), and some, it may very well be, have lost faith in her, which if is true, is even more sad. Why would you lose faith in her? Because she's not doing what you want? Not only is that very selfish but a tad insane. Like, really insane. 

Personally, these 'stans' who threaten to burn their cards any chance they can get, namely every time she does something to their distaste (I think you'll agree there is no satisfying everyone on this site at the same time), aren't really stans. These threats, (as if she'd care from people who even have the audacity to say things like it) are filled with disrespect, sometimes hatred, bordering on the cusp of unhealthy delusion and possession.

And of course these people, and they'll know who they are, will immediately reveal themselves by quoting me and throwing accusations at me because they're annoyed at my criticism. Continuing to call me 'bitter' 'to serious', telling me to 'lighten up' 'this is a forum'. And that's all very well and good for an argument when you really, have no critical argument to give. I'm not here to be bitter, or to judge anyone, or to stir **** or make anyone feel bad. I'm not 'pressed', I'm not 'pretentious'. What I am is thoroughly disappointed in what this fanbase has become. There is no respect, no setting an example for younger people who may want to join this website, there is absolutely no integrity. What there is though, is widespread delusion, unhealthy obsession, self-righteous demands (as if people deserve them), bratty, selfish, ungrateful whining, and, in turn, a complete lack of self-respect and maturity. 

And, if anyone has any objections as to why a fan who has been solely dedicated since 2008, though maybe they have not liked everything that Gaga has done, though nonetheless, for eight years has managed to remain respectful, respect that it is her art, her message, her decision, her call, her legacy, would in any way have no right to feel disappointed, by all means, I'd love to hear your argument. 

Yet, in spite of all of this, in spite of the fact that for nearly a decade my respect has never wavered, in just a matter of months of being on this site I have seen much more prolific, widespread, loud and crude discourtesy and contempt than dignity. (Of course, it is not all of you. Some of you I really admire.) 

When I call some of you out on it, you then attack me! "I was only joking" "Lighten up" "I'm allowed to have my opinion, this isn't a Gaga-ass-kissing forum." Do you think I'm unaware that you're entitled to your opinion? Do you really believe that I think this is a platform upon which a shrine should be erected for every time she coughs? 

There is a massive difference, and frankly, a very impacting difference (though some of you seem unaware of this), between voicing your opinion of distaste, and making threats, calling names, possessive, personal demands, immature and unhealthy delusion, and the most childish, ungrateful, bratty whining. And you have the audacity to say to me that I'm out of order feeling dismay because of all of this? You have the audacity to call me bitter, for being disappointed at a fanbase that I at one time used to take so much pride in belonging to? 

You ask if Gaga is trying to purge her fanbase. Obviously not. These 'fans', in effect, are paranoically purging themselves. Ironic, isn't it? Gaga loves her fans. Seeing people doubt this is very sad. Paranoid, even. But if you think for a second that behaviour like this deserves love or attention, then I'd really start to question why you call yourself a 'fan'. She has grown up, she has changed, you all will, it happens to everyone. People, especially creative people, are rarely happy with growing up. And yet, she has dealt with it so maturely, grown into a beautiful, strong woman who has survived, gone through, put up with enough sh!it from the people around her, not to also have to put up with it from people who claim to be her own fans. 

Please, I am tired of having to reiterate it, have faith in her. Lord knows she's had faith in you. The pressure is immense enough in her own mind, and I hope for her sakes that she never reads some of the stuff on this website. It's disgraceful.

Gaga has wide ranging career goals and interests that don't follow the standard pop star success formula.  She isn't intentionally purging anyone, but she will lose some fans who are only interested in her pop work. She'll also gain others.  Gaga more than other artists is going to cycle fans, but all artists cycle fans through their careers.

I think this is going to be an unintentional test to see who her true fans are. I definitely don't think that she's "trying to get rid of fans" in any sort of way, she has expressed her love for us multiple times, and I don't think she'd just go back on that. 

I do think, though, that with all this new news and whatnot, people seem scared and frustrated with how things are going. I mean, it's been about 3 years since her last solo album and the frustration and the anger of Little Monsters and even casual fans is definitely understandable; however, true fans will stick with Gaga no matter what. I think that the people who are saying "I'm unstanning" or "I hate Gaga" are just angry and don't know what they're really doing.

I hope though, that she could release 2 albums this year, the jazz one and LG5, but those are just most likely dreams and will not become a reality.

This was a very enlightening read, thank you. I have to admit I didn't notice it when I was typing, but I didn't mean all of Gaga's fans have lost faith in her. There are just some who keep saying she'll never be as 'relevant' or 'successful' as she was before. But honestly, to me, it doesn't matter if she goes number one on the charts or if she flops, because heck, I became a full stan during ARTPOP, her least commercially successful album, but one of my most favorite albums from anyone ever. It's just so annoying when they keep saying "Oh, she's killing her career" and other things of the sort. I mean, just let her do what she wants to do. It's her life! As long as she's happy, I'm happy. I don't care if she sings Jazz forever. I'll be there to whisper "Yaaaaaaaass Mama, slay me!" in my heart. I also agree with your points about what this site has become. I used to be in here all the time, just lurking, but now there's just a lot of negativity. There's still a good amount of positivity and greatness though.
