Kings/Dictators Who Choose To Live Poor And Simple

So I had heard that Portugals Dictator "Antonio Salazar" who ruled Portugal until the Nations own army killed him in 1974 and created a democratic revolution...

 

He apparently lived in a rather small house and didnt have much even tho he was the Countries dictator.[/b] He had a small house in a normal community in Lisbon (picture below)

 

 

What would make a King or Dictator choose to live kinda poor or simple????

There's Pedro II of Brazil who lived modestly until his rule was overthrown. He didn't even contest it. What's funny is that the populace was on his side and he remains popular til today especially since he abolished slavery in Brazil. It was a pretty out of place rebellion. Even the civilian republicans who pressured for the coup d'etat ended up regretting it

They may be dictators or emperors but that doesn't make them extravagant. Some of them were actually good people who wanted to better their people. Many are even reluctant in their rule, not wanting it to further their ambitions beyond what they already have. Having very expensive lifestyles goes against that ideal.
