Bernie Hits Bump on Univision: Speechless on Socialism’s Failures

The Democrats’ socialist candidate for President of the United States, Bernie Sanders, was seriously tripped up this week in an interview with Univision’s León Krauze.

When asked to explain the failure of socialist governments in Venezuela, Argentina and Brazil, Sanders completely clammed up, saying he has an opinion on the subject, but was unwilling to share it, as he is “focused on my campaign.”

Watch video here: http://www.mrctv.org/videos/bernie-hits-bump-univision-speechless-socialism-s-failures

Bernie Sanders is too busy selling socialism in the United States to discuss the catastrophic effects of socialism in major neighboring countries in the region like Venezuela, Brazil and Argentina. That’s not what his history of statements in favor of Castro in Cuba, Ortega in Nicaragua, or any of his other past endorsements of socialist governments in Latin America indicate.

-----------

Univision and Telemundo have actually distinguished themselves as the two principal U.S. broadcast networks that have devoted large blocks of coverage recently to the crisis of socialism in Venezuela, while thus far ABC, CBS and NBC have neglected to inform their audiences of the situation.

Below is the relevant transcript of the referenced segment, broadcast during the May 23, 2016 edition of Univision’s Edición Nocturna. Note that the transcript below is translated from the Spanish version of the interview presented on Univision, as the original English audio has not been made available.

LEÓN KRAUZE, UNIVISION: I am sure that you know about this topic: various leftist governments, especially the populists, are in serious trouble in Latin America. The socialist model in Venezuela has the country near collapse. Argentina, also Brazil, how do you explain that failure?

BERNIE SANDERS: You are asking me questions…

LEÓN KRAUZE, UNIVISION: I am sure you’re interested in that.

BERNIE SANDERS: I am very interested, but right now I’m running for President of the United States.

LEÓN KRAUZE, UNIVISION: So you don’t have an opinion about the crisis in Venezuela?

BERNIE SANDERS: Of course I have an opinion, but as I said, I’m focused on my campaign.

I think the context is lost in the translation. Socialism doesn't equate to democratic socialism, so him commenting on Venezuela is useless as most of their problems aren't relevent. I think he sees that, and just doesn't need to comment on it. Kind of like how Trump doesn't want to touch the KKK with a 30ft pole, but won't push them away either. They share some of his platform, but not in a way that would benefit in claiming them.

Well what's socialism really? The distinction between Democratic socialism and Pure socialism is irrelevant when it comes to economic policies. While it would be disingenuous to discuss these topics in isolation, these issues that these countries face are primarily economic in nature thanks to micro and macroscopic economic policies. Examples include the dismantlement of large private businesses to massive debts spurred by too much handouts.

Of course, Bernie is still correct in that these countries are not the United States.

Still, I think it's important that the USA understand the pitfalls of the economic systems he proposes.

A good system to compare what Bernie wants to is Sweden, which is also having its own fair share of problems.

If Sanders is selling the point of emulating the successes of these countries, he needs to provide context for their failures, otherwise he's being dishonest about his platform. He's been dodging questions such as these for a while now.

Univision and Telemundo :awkney:

Honestly both of those networks say they're all about empowering Hispanics yet I as a Hispanic born in the US can see right through their BS.

They're constantly touching on immigration (obvs. because a lot of their audience is concerned with it) but over the years they've created a false image that it's a topic most Americans care about when in reality people actually care more about the economy and health care. Now all these Hispanics are confused as to why someone like Trump has a large following... news flash. These Americans have always hated immigrants. They don't care about you. I'm pretty sure many of us saw this coming... a strong anti-immigrant climate. It's been coming. Yet these networks for years have created a false image. They are liberal and happily praised Obama until the mass deportations began.

Don't even get me started on how unprofessional the debate on Univision was back in March. Both Hillary and Bernie got such sensationalist questions :awkney:

And wow this got so off topic but I wish these networks worked towards educating Hispanics more. They barely report on the election. Max like 15 minutes at night.

Then they wonder why the Hispanic voting block is ignorant af.

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's dishonest, but he should go into detail about how these problems might face us, or in how they won't, etc.

I think you made a typo there :emma:

I agree. Now is the time. If he provides good context, he may provide a better case for himself since many people are dismissing him because they think his policies are unfeasible.

Asking you about Latin America while you're on Univision, what a gotcha question!! Lol

Basically, "you are talking about Latin America which I have no interest in...I'd much rather give you my stump speech for the ten millionth time" :D

Somebody running for POTUS in 2016 being completely uninterested in anything past American borders is absolutely unacceptable. His knowledge of foreign policy is embarrassingly limited.

OMG this so much. One of the questions questions I hated the most was when Jorge Ramos asked Hillary "Will you deport children." Like wtf is that even mean. He repeated that **** like 4 times and wouldn't elaborate.

On the second part: Univision claims they have driven approximately 100,000 people to voter registration drives. Their goal is to reach 3 Million. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2016/05/20/univision-draws-100000-to-voter-registration-drives-in-move-to-increase-its-political-clout/
