Rodrigo Duterte says he's killed 1,700 crooks; pledges 100,000 dead

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — The police warned 14-year-old Bobby Alia that there would be consequences after he was accused of stealing a cellphone in November 2003, the boy’s mother said. A few days later he was dead, stabbed in the back with a butcher knife.

He was the third of Clarita Alia’s sons to die in Davao, the southernPhilippines’ largest city, in killings that remain unsolved. A fourth was killed in 2007. All had been accused of crimes, all were stabbed and all, Ms. Alia said, had received similar warnings from the police.

For years, rights groups have called for an investigation into whether Davao’s mayor, Rodrigo Duterte — the tough-talking politician who next month will become president of the Philippines — was complicit in the killings of hundreds of people in Davao since the 1980s by what they describe as government-sanctioned death squads.

The Davao police say they have not found evidence that such organizations exist. Investigations by Human Rights Watch, the United Nations and the Philippines’ own Commission on Human Rights, however, have found evidence that they do exist and that police officers and other government officials had been involved in the killings.

The victims, the investigations found, included people suspected of committing crimes or using drugs, street children and, in some cases, people who had been mistaken for someone else.

While Mr. Duterte has denied any direct knowledge of death squads, he has long called for addressing the Philippines’ severe crime problem by killing suspected criminals. In 2009, he said they were “a legitimate target of assassination.”

Am I the only one here actually mad at the mom for letting not one but three of her children become criminals? You'd think she and the brothers would have learned from the first one. I won't say anything yet. I haven't seen first hand if his reign will be good or not. IMO, these black propaganda is not interesting.

It may not be clear from afar, but he's a pretty average guy up close. I should know since we're neighbors. Whatever crap you guys heard about him, its most possibly they arent true. I aint a denialfag, but I wouldnt be saying this if I havent noticed Davao's positive changes ever since he became mayor. Whatever actions he might implement during his term, we might as well sit back and see how it goes. 

Pretty ironic how you said "CHANGE begins in ourselves. Weak-minded people tend to depend on other people for change." when striking people who voted for Duterte. His vision was completely different from the previously elected officials. This is why, for a really long time, I'm finally impressed by the Filipino people to come out of their comfort zones and have the guts to vote for a person with such perspective. What you said is very true, but Filipino people havent considered that for ages and thats why this country has been living in a loop for decades. As for that bad rape joke, which I admit was pretty horrible, I wouldnt weigh that over the countless deeds and offerings he did in his entire life. 

I'm not saying that you guys should like him. You just have to observe and let your thoughts wait until his term is finished. 

I can say much more but lets stop it here. I'm afraid at least one of you might start a beef with me, of which I would not respond to tbh. It wouldnt change a thing anyway since the election's pretty much over

Average doesn't mean good. It doesn't even mean anything. Any evil person could be "average" once you meet them. 

I wouldn't want to compromise my morality for "positive changes" or for the countless "deeds" and "offerings" that the presumptive president will do. The whole nation could have chosen for the president who would literally risk her life to make the government and the citizens work with each other harmoniously.

It's not ironic when people compromise their beliefs over a candidate who promises plans without substance. That's not change. It would be totally ironic, however, if they voted for miriam, not him. 

Of course we'll observe and be more critical. People voted for this guy, unfortunately.

Well, there's only one way to find out then. We can either wait 6 harmonious years, or another 6 tragic years. As of now, none of us are certain yet but there's basically nothing else we can do about it.
