The Russian broadcaster Channel One has officially confirmed to ESC Today that Russia will withdraw from Eurovision this year, due Julia Samoylovas travel ban to Ukraine :noparty:

An official statement by EBU hasn't been made yet.

This is just sad. After Romania last year (it was their own fault tho), this is even worse. I hope to see Julia next year. She deserves to be on the stage and to enjoy the whole Eurovision adventure. This is really a black day for the whole message behind Eurovision.

The double standard when Ukraine won with a political song.

I don't even understand how 1944 was allowed to be performed... Let alone win the competition...

Amen! I really hate this whole hypocritical situation. Ukraine lost my respect.

How is Macedonia doing with the public? Any chance of placing a spot in the finals?

She is one of the favorites to be honest. I will be surprised if she didn't make it. I only worry about her personality, because she seems a little bit arrogant. Her vocals are good so far I've heard. With a good staging I can't see her flop. She is in my top 5. :diane:

Since Russia sadly will leave Eurovision I decided to dedicate this post to them. When it comes to Eurovision Russia is one of the most successful countries with alot of great entries 🇷🇺

Russia made their debut in Eurovision 1994 and always made it to the final except for in 1996 when they didn't pass the qualifying round. They have no less than 12 top 10 placings with one victory.

Here are the ones that made it to the top 3. Which ones are your favorites?

Lose control. Let go and fall. Do you get the satisfaction?

She is horrid when performing live. And has a little or no charisma IMO. So... It has a lot of potential to be a fan flop this year.

Yet a certain host nation has the right to involve their political conflicts #CelebrateDiversity? :madge:

To be honest, I am mad at both Russia and Ukraine.

Russia obviously used poor Julia and only wanted to make a spectacle, shading Ukraine, which they succeeded. Ukraine took the bait and there may be repercussions.

Putting aside the facts like this is a music contest, celebrating diversity etc., lets be honest about one thing. No matter what EBU or any of you say, Eurovision was, is and always will be a political contest. If it weren't, Ukraine wouldn't have won last year.

Everybody last year thought how smart of Europe for showing the middle finger to Russia and "giving" Ukraine the victory. Well, now its payback time. Russia successfully orchestrated this mess and is slowly becoming a winner in the process.

But, I must say I am more on Ukrainian side. Law is the law, everybody has to respect it and obey it. Russia was aware of it, yet it decided to send Julia, being aware of all the potential problems. This is exactly what the great Mother wanted, people siding with her, when it is clear that Russia is the only bad guy in this story. Pathetic really.

Now I am waiting for EBU to ban Ukraine after the contest, and Russia will walk free. My, my...

Also, to shade Russia a bit more, Julia's song was utter garbage, old-fashioned, cheesy and boring. Probably a top 10 placing because it is Russia, so I am glad all those points might go to the entries which deserve them more.

She is indeed one of the favorites, but I feel like the live singing will ruin everything (Azerbaijan 2016, Albania 2015) :(

Anyway, where did you exactly see her being arrogant? I loved her in the wiwibloggs interview

They both might be idiots here, just like two stubborn brothers who refuse to be the bigger person but even if it is the law I think Ukraine should be banned. It's not worthy a hosting nation to involve their political issues in an event that's supposed to unite everyone rather than split them up so just because it is the law doesn't make it ok. It should have consequenses as it ruins the contest.

If Russia had agreed to perform via satellite some place else Ukraine would've refused to broadcast it so it's clear that it's more to it than just Julia traveling to Ukraine and "the law".

They are practically at war. Ukrainians fear for their sovereignty, lives even. It is only natural for some decisions to be driven by emotion, rather than reason.

Russia is the perpetrator, and on top of that, it plays wicked mind games, only this time Eurovision is the platform. Some decisions by Ukraine may be wrong, but I can understand them. They will not let Russia oppress them in any way if they can stop it.

My only regret is that Eurovision will suffer the most from this charade.

I'm sorry but y'all are both over-sensitive and totally insensitive at the same time.

Why is it wrong for a country to enforce their laws on everyone equally? And how does that stop the contest in any way to 'celebrate diversity'?

BTw, 1944 WAS NOT a political song. It was a song about Ukraine's history. Why can't a person sing about their nation's history? You could basically say that about all the LGBT songs in ESC. They are actually more political than 1944.

Russia, on the other hand, does nothing else but politics when it comes to ESC. Yes, I feel sorry for Yulia and her unfortunate situation in life and this contest, but it's actually pretty understandable and isn't even a question, why isn't she allowed in the country... What has been done - is done.

I was wondering if there are some little monsters from Europe (and other continents as well) who are Eurovision Song Contest fans.

I would like to hear your experiences about ESC, favorite songs and performances, thoughts about this year's songs, and if somebody attended ESC, I would be happy to hear his/her experience. If was always one of my dreams to attend ESC, but unfortunately it was never held in my country. :(

I was born in 1999 and I watched my first ESC in 2003 - I was only 3 years old and I have never missed a minute of a show since then, so this is my 14th year. Probably an addiction, yeah... :bye:

Speaking of songs, I am still waiting for the song who will top a legendary bop and timeless classic "Euphoria" by Loreen. If somebody says there's something better than that, she/he's lying.

Reminder: This year's ESC takes place in Kyiv, Ukraine on 9, 11 and 13 May. Less than a month to go!!!

I'm from Spain and I remember seeing it when I was a child with all my family but I don't remember any of the songs:toofunny:  I started to watch it every year since 2013 I think but I'm not a fan. It may be because my country always ends at the last places as it chooses tragic songs :madge:

We have for every year a thread on it, and last year we had a viewing party and GGD Eurovision

Pretty sure we'll have these this year as well

I just want to let Sweden host every year :diane:

Or let Germany go the 2010-2012 route with finding singers :tony:

Or let us host a giant show like in 2011 :tony:
