American Life vs American Idiot

As we all know, Madonna's album "American Life" almost put an end to her career in the US because of its controversial nature and the shots that were fired towards American culture in general. The backlash she received was huge.

On the other hand, we have Green Day who released American Idiot, an album with a lead single that explored a similar theme to American Life while being even more obvious about it. Even though they were already popular before, this album made them even more famous and popular and the title track was their first song to enter the Billboard Hot 100. I haven't read a lot about this and I assume they still got backlash for what they did, but it was not a career damaging moment in any way; quite the opposite actually.

Why do you think these two acts received such different responses for similar content?

Sister

Madonna is Madonna and has always had her haters, while Green Day is a pop punk band and this is a move that is wanted and very predictable of them and their genre.

The future's uncertain and the end is always near.

I'm not comparing the albums' quality, I'm comparing the response received because of their similar themes. I have not heard either album in full (this said, I'm currently listening to Madonna's whole discography album by album, can't wait until I get to American Life).

Bio

1. Sexism

2. The American Life video which is very in your face

3. She wasn't even living in America and was very loud about it

4. American Life came a year before American Idiot, so people hadn't really changed their minds on Bush yet

The reviews for American Life were absolutely clueless. Like, so many went in on her supposedly having nothing to say on it and how the whole thing was uninspired. I don't understand that at all.

I do think the album will be differently reviewed in retrospect. I mean, the production on that sing is stellar. It could be released to day and still sound fresh.

Basicly this. It was a great are though and a great album. And that original AL video was truly great.

The thing is that American Life isn't bad, it's even pretty good but it's not good enough to pull through. Cause if you don't (oops edit) dig a bit and listen to it and appreciate, it seems that Madonna is using her usual strategy.

On the other hand you have Green Day with great, accessible, pleasent music, catchy, good lyrics, great visuals and a punk attitude. They're not stupid, they know very well how to play the game, but it still feels very unique. Because that's who they are.

It's not about misogyny. At least that's not the central point. It's about the quality of the music.
