Trump will not release tax returns before November

In a reversal, Donald Trump no longer appears eager to release his tax returns before the November election.

Trump said in a Tuesday interview with The Associated Press that an ongoing Internal Revenue Service audit was his primary reason for not releasing documents. But he also said he didn’t think voters would care.

“There’s nothing to learn from them,” he said.

Trump, the presumptive GOP nominee, has for months declined to release his tax returns, citing an audit. However, the billionaire developer previously indicated that he wanted to disclose his records, a traditional practice during presidential campaigns.

“As far as my return, I want to file it,” he said during a February debate. “I will absolutely give my return, but I’m being audited now for two or three years, so I can’t do it until the audit is finished, obviously,” he added.

He also told the Syracuse Post-Standard in April, “I actually look forward to giving the tax returns, but as soon as the audit is complete.”

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican nominee, prominently raised the tax return issue in February by speculating about a possible “bombshell”hidden in Trump’s records. Romney is a fierce critic of Trump’s candidacy.

“Either he’s not anywhere near as wealthy as he says he is, or he hasn’t been paying the kind of taxes we would expect him to pay,” Romney suggested at the time. “Or perhaps he hasn’t been giving money to the vets or the disabled, like he’s been telling us he’s been doing.”

The IRS will conduct audits of some people's tax filings. It doesn't mean they've already identified a problem, but it doesn't mean they haven't either. Many people get audited. Through this process, you must provide additional supporting documentation of everything that you claimed to be true in your initial tax filings. He is saying that he cannot release anything until multiple years are fully reviewed and the case is closed on his audit by the IRS.

Does the IRS not have to confirm they are actually auditing someone? Or can you just say you are being audited...

As recently as Sunday, Trump pledged to release the returns “as fast as the auditors finish.” Last October, Trump said he would release his tax returns once Hillary Clinton released her emails. Now, Trump adds that he’s not planning to release them because “there’s nothing to learn from them” and voters aren’t interested in the information.

The announcement is a sharp break from historical precedent. Although the number of years for which they’ve released tax returns vary, every party nominee since 1976 has released some. 

It’s also a sharp break from Trump’s own advice to Mitt Romney. In January 2012, Trump told Greta Van Sustren that Romney “was hurt really very badly” by his initial refusal to release his tax returns. He advised Romney to “release them now.”

Presidential nominees are expected to release their tax returns and have done so for the last forty years. 

Preseidential nominees are not expected to release transcripts of speeches they gave as private citizens. Not one nominee has ever done so.

He has also said he doesn’t believe voters are interested.

Just on Sunday, the presumptive Republican nominee told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he’d be willing to release them should the audit be finished in time.

When asked if he would pledge to release them before the election, Trump responded, “Sure, if — if — if the auditors finish. I’ll do it as fast as the audit is finished. Remember this, I’ve already given my financials. And my financials show I’m worth more than $10 billion by any stretch of the imagination.”
