In all her interviews when asked she is saying that she likes her and that she is great singer and songwriter and does her thing. Rather then dismiss criticism of Born This Way by telling the press that Express Yourself was also heavily inspired by another song, Madonna sipped her tea and snidely called Gaga's art reductive. She went on to cover Born This Way while images insulting Gaga's fans were projected behind her. It was a nasty and insecure moment which highlights perfectly the differences between Cyndi Lauper and Madonna - which was my point.

Impostor 4,114
I fear that maybe Gaga and Katy are like Cindy and Madonna. They've started together, but Gaga and Cindy are more talented, while Katy and Madonna make the biggest hits. (But of course it's a blasphemy to put Katy next to Madonna lol)

She actually said just that song was reductive (which does not just mean it sounds like it, I think more factors need to be considered, but anyway), in that same interview she said Gaga was not copying her work and they were two completely different artists. She reiterated that in an interview last year. Just the song was the problem. (And I still believe there's a big chance that whole feud was fake.) 8 hours ago, SKANK said: She went on to cover Born This Way while images insulting Gaga's fans were projected behind her. It was a nasty and insecure moment which highlights perfectly the differences between Cyndi Lauper and Madonna - which was my point. I think there was more to that performance than that. It didn't seem to catch anyone's attention that she put a lot of emphasis on the lyric "Respect yourself" right before the "She's not me" line that got everybody's nickers twisted. If you know your Madonna history, you know that Express Yourself was itself accused of copying a song, titled "Respect Yourself". Granted, "[so you can: she scrapped this part] respect yourself" is in the EY lyrics, but the placement mixed with the backdrop should make people take a second look. After all the backdrop was most of all about how pop culture is recycled constantly and how people mistake artifice with identity. Which makes sense in the narrative of the whole show. That segment was all about a fall into pride and materialism, so I think interpreting it just as Gaga (fan) shade is just too quick and lazy. It has to especially be noted that at the end of the show the backdrop's 3D imagery (already in stark contrast to the sharp 2D of the pop art influenced backdrop during EY/BTW) explodes to reveal the "outside", the "real", this as the climax of a segment in which Madonna regains her spirituality and connection to the people around her. So there's more to it, obviously. I think Madonna took the chance to make headlines while still incorporating the moment in a smart way into her own show. And she still found a way to compliment Gaga in the exact same interview that's now notorious for her "slamming" Gaga, when, in reality, there's no single difference between that comment and Gaga calling out Katy for stealing her stage props and wigs. To return to your original point: Madonna has complimented Gaga since 2008, calling her very talented, complimenting her vocals, complimenting her Madonna references (which are undeniable), inviting her to parties, meeting with her and introducing her daughter to her, working with her on SNL (where they came up with the feud idea on their own: hint), having "very deep, personal moments" with Gaga (Gaga's own quote) before 2011. If they had a falling out that needs to be rooted in the actual song, which tons of journalists, critics, fans,... recognized as an EY rip-off because of the chords and the chorus melody before Madonna even opened her mouth about it.
