Cyndi Lauper has dismissed long-standing reports suggesting she and Madonna were rivals in the 1980s. The 62-year-old released her first album, She's So Unusual, in 1983, the same year Madonna released her self-titled debut. Cyndi's enjoyed chart success with hits like Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and Time After Time, while Madonna hit the top of the charts with smashes including Material Girl, Holiday and Lucky Star. But despite the fact both pop stars made a major mark on the music business, Cyndi never felt they were adversaries. "She's great," she told Britain's Event magazine. "She always did great. We were like apples and oranges. I always hated it when they (the media) pitted us together. I never felt in competition, except when the press did that." Cyndi has always been a fan of the 57-year-old's work, and thinks they both had their own strengths, which made them successful. "They’d say I was more talented than her," she recalled. "Well, maybe at some things. Sisterhood is a powerful thing, and everybody influences everybody else. If we don’t, why are we on the planet?" Cyndi has found a new 'sister' in Lady Gaga, after the pair joined forces for a Mac Cosmetics Viva Glam campaign in 2010."‘I was with my little sister freak," she smiled. "She started dancing and I said, 'Gosh, I used to dance like that, too.' She looked at me and said, 'Cyn, how do you think I learned!'" Cyndi's style has always been unique, which explains why she was such a major influence on the likes of Gaga, but she admitted to the publication her first record label tried to make her a more conventional pop star. "(I) got fed up with the whole industry," she admitted. "I was at the same company way too long. I even kept a manager who sat beside me and told me I was never going to be as big as I was in the beginning. And I stayed! That’s how stupid I was."

As someone that lived the 80s, Cyndi was really talented. I believe after her 2nd album she just didnt had Madonna s thirst for fame. Maybe if she had other people next to her,  her career could unravel differently.

If Gaga never succeed again I'd rather kill myself honestly, I don't want Katy to be around in 30 years while Gaga is nowhere to be seen or heard. :saladga:

You can literally say the same thing about Gaga & Katy. One is really talented while the other is just thirsty for fame & hits.

Cyndi Lauper has been crediting Gaga with revitalizing her career and creativity for a while now, and not giving any credence to people who accuse Gaga of copying her style. Unlike bitter Grace Jones or insecure Madonna, Cyndi praises Gaga and her work every chance she gets. How honorable and refreshing is that?

I'm loving her new Wanda Jackson cover.

The thing is many, many different factors will influence how successful someone is. Obviously talant and determination and hard work are a factor... But so much more comes to play

- physical looks

- competition during your releases

- trends in your time (beatles i think only were as big as they were cause their style came at a perfect time)

- image (sometimes when media picks on something they never let it go)

- How much your label believes in you and how much they promote you

- timing of releases and promo oppurtunities (for example Gaga was lucky super bowl and David tribue oppurtunities came rigjt after her jazz era, perfect to clean her immage)

I mean i can go on and on. And how successful they are has nothing to do with whether they deserve it or not

Theres many artists that have been forgoten that tbh i thought were way more talanted than some of the legends. :air:

As you said, you were around in the 80s and im sure you can comfirm what Im saying is true

the only time Madonna criticized Gaga was for BTW. You all listen to what you want. In all her interviews when asked she is saying that she likes her and that she is great singer and songwriter and does her thing.

Well, from my memories. Cyndi s dress style wasn t that easily to be utilized by teens. Another factor for success was that Cyndi was already 30 years old when she became famous.(Ageism even then:lolga:

I have listened many of her latest albums, althought never bought one.

She's So Unusual was the first album I asked my parents to buy for me.  IMHO, that album is timeless.
