I think the leaked snippets were being called the "rape ad", especially since R. Kelly drugs her; if it's consented, why the need to incapacitate someone?

But since the whole video never surfaced, we'll never know the whole story/plot of the video.

'Cause she was going into surgery :green: duh, Becky :green:

Yeah, I feel like the video got away from her. Between R. Kelly and Terry Richardson, it got so much more sexual and uncomfortable than it needed to be :toofunny: the writing was cringe worthy too. "When you wake up, you're gonna be pregnant" like, how long is she going to be out? 'Cause it takes a few days for even the best pregnancy tests to detect it :wtf: putting the girl into a coma or something...what was I talking about?

I have never understood the people that say the song or the leaked video was "a rape ad" :toofunny:

The name of the song literally gives consent. "Do What U Want", like there's no "*" that leads to a footnote listing things you may want to do but can't or something :smh:

I think it's not so much giving consent, but saying that no matter how someone may use her body or her appearance they can never rape her mind. So while they are busy taking advantage of what's on the outside, she recognizes that it's what's on the inside that counts.

It's a way of saying that even when others think they are getting the best of her, she's the one controlling which parts of her they use.

Like at the AMAs :ohno:

It was all badass and #confident until the end when it was her and a piano (with baby Gaga in the background) and it became this tragic story of an artist tortured by misconceptions and ignorance

Oh, I understand what she was going for, I just didn't understand the people who saw the leaked footage or heard the song and were like "so she supports rape? :wtf:"

'Cause other than R. Kelly's cringe line, there's really no basis for that thought :green:

Truthfully though Gaga wasn't very smart to enlist R. Kelly and Terry Richardson for a song like that. I mean, speaking out against how women are not taken seriously when they say they've been sexually assaulted but then working with two people who women have spoken out against for sexual assault is like...

Can you eleborate this please? I'd like to know your impression of why do you think it's a dark record, putting apart songs like Dope or Swine.

well, it's not only my impression, gagz said it herself in a few interviews.

first, it has to be addressed that the songs on ARTPOP were all created during a critical time in her life and it was not only her body but also her creativity that had to suffer. most of the songs were written to an already existing beat/instrumental; by contrast, she has always started the songwriting process by sitting at her piano. that's one important aspect. discovering the dark undertone of the album is a matter of interpretation, really. (watching her interviews doesn't hurt either, of course.) here is mine:

(1) aura: trying to protect her "real"/private identity from the public, so it won't be torn apart
(2) venus: the tragedy of finding true love, it might mean that she has to give up/alter her identity ("die a little inside")
(3–4) g.u.y. and sexxx dreams: probably connected to the main theme of venus; if i remember correctly, these 3 songs constitute the ARTPOP trilogy; the former is about fearing that her strong/feminist identity will get in the way, the latter is about dreaming about an ideal lover that won't cost her her identity
(5) jewels n' drugs: she wants drugs and love, not jewels and money, probably to escape reality; foreshadowing the addiction theme of dope and MJH
(6) MANiCURE: it's the combination of true love and addiction, being addicted to finding true love "not to feel so insecure" but not being able to find her ideal lover, only "goners"
(7) do what u want: misunderstood and -treated identity, false public perception, media backlash, popstar/artist dichotomy; foreshadowing the rape theme of swine, the superficial blonde theme of donatella, and the ARTPOP idea (art/pop can belong together)
(8) ARTPOP: the warholian ideal, constantly struggling between ART (artist) and POP (celebrity), aiming to fuse (the two) when they (the music industry, the public) refuse
(9) swine: rape, physical and emotional abuse, losing her sense of identity, self-blaming
(10) donatella: false social perception of the blonde, plastic, rich celebrity, ironic lyrics, similar to the concept behind TF
(11) fashion!: sort of reflecting/elaborating on donatella, "looking good" doesn't necessarily equals to "feeling fine," material/ethereal love
(12) mary jane holland: her alter ego/persona living high (princess high), truest form of addiction
(13) dope: quite self-explanatory
(14–15) gypsy and applause: returning to the idea of an ideal lover, whether it is a man (gypsy) or the stage and her fans (applause) is debatable, bittersweet journey on the road to finding her true self and true love

This makes me love the album even more than I do, I'm so mean towards this album, always shading it. Poor ARTPOP. :ohno:

Addison Rae

I never really thought about it being a 'scary' song, I always felt Bloody Mary was scarier because I always had to skip it before she started singing and when she screamed I was listening to it at night and screamed so loud. :toofunny:
