I just said it wasn't harrassment (you seriously wanna compare that to someone crossing the line of making statements and systematically trying to damage someone's well-being?) and that I think it's ludicrous that people want to waste their time calling for this guy to be silenced or punished while those same people hold freedom of speech as one of the reasons we've transcended barbarism, whatever that might be. That is all. You're confusing things. Freedom of speech does not imply freedom from consequence. People have the right to tell others that this man is a misogynist for his comments. There is no involvement with the law. He should be punished by being stripped of respect and silenced indirectly by losing support for his statements. I know you don't follow politics that much, but you don't realize that there are patterns here. The statement regarding Megyn Kelly is one of many. Spoiler This is all ignoring the fact that he has a legion of ignorant followers who perpetuate the harassment themselves. Not to mention that many of the innocuous statements you are defending constitute harassment in the form of continuously dragging the names of his ex-wives on TV stations through the mud as sexual objects, as well as repeatedly insulting certain women by calling them fat or ugly, among other things. He should be punished by being stripped of respect and silenced indirectly by people being outraged by his ludicrous statements. That's 100% true indeed. But people wouldn't take what he says to heart that much if they really believed in freedom of speech, so for me, that argument is empty. As one of my fav personalities today says: "I can't offend you, you have to take offense". And, sure, to call to silence Trump is definitely freedom of speech as well, but it is an idiotic response as easily shown. Consequences can be different than proclaiming he's wrong for using his freedoms. In the end you have to refer to yourself and why you take offense, not the other way around. But that's just my idealistic self. 2 minutes ago, LebaneseDude said: I know you don't follow politics that much, but you don't realize that there are patterns here. Well, ok, granted, I didn't know that. But I only had the video in the OP. This is becoming a pattern, so I guess I won't be making those statements again in your threads which seem to require some previous knowledge That's fine, though. I don't mind. Just took my chance to state my views on things.

Right but there is a basic level of respect that allows civil society to function and transcend barbarism as you said. You need to take other people into consideration. It's not about censorship. It's about respect. 5 minutes ago, Didymus said: And, sure, to call to silence Trump is definitely freedom of speech as well, but it is an idiotic response as easily shown. But that's just my idealistic self. I am not a woman. I lived in a country where women were often treated improperly. In certain contexts, misogynistic talk is culturally acceptable even among women themselves. The American culture frowns upon such statements, and Trump is making himself the poster boy of misogyny. The reason I personally take offense is because I don't believe people should be so liberal in speaking rudely about others in public. If he made these statements in private, then I'd disapprove of his character but it stops there. This man is running for president. 5 minutes ago, Didymus said: Well, ok, granted, I didn't know that. MJHolland 12,725
When a woman makes remarks about a man's physical body, she's championed as sexually liberated. When a man says the same of a woman, he's a superpredator and it's harassment. 42 minutes ago, LebaneseDude said: Kidding right? Almost all of the first half of the video constituted harassment or misogyny in one form or another. Even the innocuous ones like talking about someone's chest are hilarious. Is that the kind of person you would want representing you? He has no restraint. ---- In any case this is a video from the GOP, so hell if I care how biased it is. They're ripping each other apart Wrong. If a woman says a guy can't be a 10 without having 10 inches, it's funny and liberating and refreshing. If a man has a personal physical preference, he's a pig and hates women. Logic.

It's like a caveman but I've said equally sexual things about men. The difference is that I don't say it in public for all the world to know. Also if a woman said a guy can't be a 10 without having a 10 she'd be ridiculed lol, Plus it's not as common for women to treat men as sexual objects so the context is different. It certainly was liberating a decade or so ago like in Sex and the City. Not so much today. Edited just now by LebaneseDude.

Well, I never believed in barbarism and I still hold to the belief that the only thing that keeps civil society standing is power and fear. Nor do I think respecting women, who then are apparently a "weak sex" to be protected at all times, from statements about their physical appearance while subjecting them (and men) constantly to images of unattainable beauty standards is respectful at all. To me, it's a handy cloud over real issues that could have real impact. That's how civil society works. Provide channels for public frustration, but only channels that give people the illusion they have anything to say at all and thus keep real resistance to a bare minimum. I don't find that pessimistic btw. I find that quite a fascinating mechanism, actually. In any case, complaining about what people say is definitely one of those useless channels. 9 minutes ago, LebaneseDude said: The reason I personally take offense is because I don't believe people should be so liberal in speaking rudely about people in public. Well, can I ask you a maybe unexpected question, then: why is it ok to speak rudely about people who speak rudely about people in public? Do they deserve it but other people don't? If so, doesn't that just open up a channel for people to vent in a "socially accepted" way that isn't an improvement on the original situation (Trump talking smack about women) at all? Different coat, same animal in my opinion. 9 minutes ago, LebaneseDude said: Just allow me or someone else to elaborate if you believe you don't have the full picture, or if you're so inclined look it up yourself. Different coat, same animal in my opinion. It's simple. People are naturally entitled to some level of verbal respect. It's an unspoken contract. You don't say what's on your mind to someone you don't know. You don't have any information nor any context. If some random stranger started calling you all sorts of things, that constitutes harassment, plain and simple. People who speak rudely and are unapologetic about it lose that privilege. Some people revel in that freedom and instantly become hostile the moment someone does something they construe as rude, like flipping you off and calling you a jackass if you accidentally bump into them. Others such as myself like to get more context before formulating an opinion on someone's character and intent. Trump is overtly rude to women and has displayed a lack of respect to anything that isn't White or American. It's not a one-off thing. He's done it and said it repeatedly, and is even proselytizing that disrespect to his followers. In fact that's the real issue. It's not just that he's disrespectful. He's empowering others as well.
