I know that you didn't say it, but in the context of a legal suit it is their position that what happened to them regarding the race of the baby was wrong. She has a good 5 years (until the child starts school) to learn more about racism, race issues, black history, etc. before the child starts asking questions and being treated differently. She also learned about it 4 months before the birth. Would those 5 months plus whatever other time she spent during the artificial insemination really make that much of a difference to her to warrant calling the race of the baby, which she is going to have as her child her whole life, a moral wrongdoing?

In the context of the law, they were misled and that's it. The race of the baby only plays the part of "damages" as the mother may not feel like she can raise a mixed race baby as well as she could raise a white baby. It could potentially be damaging for the child and the family. A study found Ohio to be one of the most racist states, if she did not want to bring a mixed race child up in that environment I believe she's totally right to feel that way. It could be extremely hard on her and the child.

It can be extremely hard, and yes she had the right to choose which was violated, but to put the race of the child under damages, to claim that it is more about the cost of the race of the child rather than about consent, seems extremely racist. If you ask people of color if they had the choice, would they really choose to grow up white to receive white privilege, and I think the vast majority would say no. They take pride in their perseverance, and the struggle they went through and survived. Just because something isn't easy doesn't make it "damages." There is value to struggle in itself. There is value to being an outsider, and seeing culture from an outside perspective, belonging to neither and both at the same time. There is value to being different. To claim that the race of the child is deleterious is to ignore all these aspects of personal integrity and growth that isn't as easily measured as racism but is still there.

I agree with the latter in your post but that is why I believe the mother may be worried. She's doubting her abilities to support and raise a child through that struggle? A lot of celebrities adopt foreign children knowing they can give that child a better life, what if this woman believes she can't give this child a better life than if it had a strong black parent?

I really don't believe this woman's issue with the race of the child is to do with her being racist, it's to do with her doubting her abilities to raise the child as well as someone else could.

I have no problem with this and there are no indications she loves her child any less. The agency screwed up and they deserve to be punished.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.  I'm hopeful the lawsuit was filed in order to hold the sperm bank accountable because clearly they are running a messy business if they can't keep track which clients are getting inseminated with which sperm.  I'm sure the two women will make great loving parents and care for their child regardless of her skin color.  It's more about making sure the facility is doing its job.

I get the upset. Not sure if this is racist or not, wholly depends on whether their frustration over getting sperm from the wrong donor clouds their love of this child that is clearly theirs now. Like if they don't love it or think about giving it away or something
