Kim Dotcom warns to back up all your files: MEGA may close soon.

Not only has been MEGA in a miserable financial situation for quite some time, behind the scenes it doesn't look better as Kim Dotcom said:

"I'm not involved in Mega anymore. Neither in a managing nor in a shareholder capacity. The company has suffered from a hostile takeover by a Chinese investor who is wanted in China for fraud. He used a number of straw-men and businesses to accumulate more and more Mega shares. Recently his shares have been seized by the NZ government. Which means the NZ government is in control. In addition Hollywood has seized all the Megashares in the family trust that was setup for my children. As a result of this and a number of other confidential issues I don't trust Mega anymore. I don't think your data is safe on Mega anymore. But my non-compete clause is running out at the end of the year and I will create a Mega competitor that is completely open source and non-profit, similar to the Wikipedia model. I want to give everyone free, unlimited and encrypted cloud storage with the help of donations from the community to keep things going."

No idea how long MEGA is going to last from now on. But I think as soon as it goes down, there will be several new options to replace it.

And as he said, since MEGA is in some form in the hand of the New Zealand government, even though it is still a fully encrypted service, you better shouldn't upload anything to it anymore that could get you in jail. :/

Torrents exist.

(It's been over two years since I last used any direct download service, so it doesn't really bother me...and if ppl go to jail for using torrents, well, then I guess only grandparents will be left out...and that's not a world I want to live in. jk)

ATTENTION: (bad) jokes and sarcasm are still a thing, so don't take everything I say literally. Thank you.

BitTorrent may be an option.
But most people don't have a program for that installed.

Spoiler

If you need one,

Transmission is one of the best ones.
Free and OpenSource, and available for any platform there is.

Mac / Linux download:
https://www.transmissionbt.com/download/

Windows download:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/trqtw/

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Are there any alternative services you could transfer them to? I don't really use any of this so I'm not sure how it differs to other sites :/

That's the kinda thing I was thinking of. Did MEGA have bigger space allowances than those sites though?

It would probably take weeks to download it all and I don't think it would fit on my hard drive :wtf: I'll have to figure out if I can transfer them some other way

I'm not sure :/ I don't really use any of the three to store stuff, just to occasionally share or download things that are shared with me/everyone.

Everyone used Mega for any copyrighted stuff because it was encrypted all the way, from the transfer from your computer to their servers and the other way around.
And they did not store any keys required to decrypt anything that was on their servers, so no one can legally force them to turn the data (and the users) over.

They did not know in any way what users uploaded to their servers.

But since Kim Dotcom was the owner of Megaupload, which got closed by the FBI and Hollywood, no bank wants to work with him so he can't pay for anything Mega related.

One other option may be BitTorrent, but it's not always encrypted and trackable by authorities/Hollywood.

Any service from Google, Microsoft, Apple, Dropbox etc. looks through your data.
They technically are able to delete anything that's copyrighted and may even tell authorities.
So for most of the purposes that Mega was used for, they are not an option.

For general storage, they are perfectly fine and I use Google Drive myself.
