The same people who are ardently in favor of Hollywood taking creative liberties with original source material when it means creating more racial diversity in film are the same people who are outraged when Hollywood takes creative liberties by casting a white actor to portray a character that was originally a minority in the source material.

A black James Bond? Great. A white Anime character? Outrageous.

If telling your tribes story is vitally important to you, then you tell it, don't expect a cooperation like Hollywood to tell if for you.

Oh. You again.

So were YOU the casting manager? did you see all the other actresses that wanted to get a part in the movie? how do you know ScarJo is the most qualified? elaborate. And, yes, race is a huge topic of discussion. Usually minorities like yourself wont understand **** because yall are full of ignorance.

Scarlett Johansson is one of the most successful actresses of out time - get her in your movie, and you have financings secured. It is sad to say, but there is no Asian actress on the American market that is capable of holding a project on her shoulders. At least, not the way ScarJo can.

Also.... where were you when they remade The Ring with Naomi Watts? Or The Grudge with Sarah Michelle Gellar? Or Sisters with Emily Browning? This topic is old as ****, and I don't get why people are acting so surprised by the fact this is still going on.

I know haha. Her original hair color was suppose to be white but Naoko was convinced by her publishers or someone to change it to blonde to attract more people with the cover. I like how in one of the live action adaptations they had Usagi with dark hair and when she transformed it was blonde :flutter: I just love Sailor Moon anyways

I totally understand where you're coming from. Growing up I watched SOME anime and noticed like a lot of characters look white and a few black (brock from pokemon).

Yeah, I even watched Yu-Gi-Oh , so many that do not look Asian at all. :smh:  But I guess, they HAVE to be Asian, because it's Anime and Asian. Now I sound too ignorant I guess, if I would make a movie, I would have just took a cast that looks like the characters. And that coming from every damn race, if they just fit the character. Where do you find a Black Asian, for example, so easily?

Well there probably isn’t a high-profile youthful and WORLDWIDE SUPERSTAR asian actress taht could fit the role so that’s probably the main reason. they need em coins and scarlett johansson attracts people

That's just sad, though. And that STILL doesn't explain the rest of the cast... If anything, this isn't going to have the movie do well. It just shows the bad side of Hollywood.

That character (and A LOT of anime characters) look western. Isn't the whole western look and sometimes fashion appreciated in Japanese culture anyway?

Anyway, Scarlett looks more like that character than any Japanese person I know, plus this is being made in the U.S. correct? If they want to make a mint off the film, they'll use characters that their market can relate to.

EDIT - I'm totally for diversity in films.... but that character looks far more Western to me than Japanese.

The effing character is Japanese. They made a Japanese character with a Japanese name who speaks in Japanese, into an white American lady. And there was no audition, Scarlet liked the series and decided to try to make it a film. She shouldn't have played the lead role.

The project would definitely not exist at all if ScarJo had not endorsed it. Do you think Hollywood cares about diversity? Diversity doesn't bring people to theaters. Megastars like Scarlett Johansson do.

James Bond being Black wouldn't make such a significant difference compared to casting a white female to play a Japanese person.

Exactly! It is not necessarily great for diversity, but that's the reality of the market.

In their defence, The character doesn't look Asian :emma: Just like in Sailor Moon for example; no one looks Asian. I think the problem is not the directors choice, but maybe the original anime. If you want to create a Japanese character, make them look Japanese, and then probably a live action version would have a Japanese actor.

It wouldn't matter if the character "looked" Japanese. Hollywood would still cast a white lead.

And just cause the character doesn't look Asian doesn't mean that you should automatically cast a white person. The look isn't the end all be all. The fact that it's a Japanese anime set in Asia is indication enough that maybe someone Japanese should be set to play the role. And nobody should say "Oh if an Asian actress was good enough, they would have put her in" cause Hollywood doesn't even give Asian entertainers the time of day, let alone the lead role in a major movie.

Haroon

My eyes find it more puzzling when an asian actor plays an anime character because the features don't match up as much as they do when a western-featured actor plays them  Not sure if I'm conveying my point correctly or if I'm even being politically correct, but please know that I mean no disrespect or harm :duck:

Well if she wanted to make the movie and is putting her own money into it to play a character shes passionate about then that isn't as bad imo. It's still a bit ignorant but if I had the chance to play tuxedo mask from sailor moon, I totally would especially if I was making the film. But again, I do see the validity of the argument with this. Hollywood does like to white was everything to hell and back.
