Well, people need to realize that it's a much bigger issue than a casting choice. Hollywood has been remaking foreign films for decades - producers would rather remake the same film in English with a complete anglo-saxon cast than distributing the original thing.

Americanization is a real thing, also because Americans would rather see a Hollywood film than a subtitled Japanese, French or German picture. It's also up to the people to go to artsy theaters and to open their tastes to other cultural products. For the industry to change, people also need to change. Just sayin'.

Arrogant directors need to change, and the status quo and stereotyping need to cease.

Well Americans can benefit from watching a subtitled movie (like what other countries do) and who says the movie would have to be exactly in Japanese?

I'm not. Please care to read what else I have wrote in the thread. I do not have to know the origin of anime, and I have said that I do understand why Anime fans would get mad over this.

You are calling out very quick without understanding from another perspective.

Mmmhmmm

Like I said, for that to happen, people would need to change their tastes and habits. In the end, producers just want to sell their products to the biggest number, they're just putting on screen whatever people want to see and identify with most.

to be fair, the character is japanese so it makes sense to have a japanese female lead

you COULD go for someone like Lucy Liu or Doona Bae but one is American and the other is Korean and it does just support the "all asians look the same" thing

Exactly my point! What I'm criticizing here is the fact Americans mostly don't give 2 shits about other cultures, and that's why Hollywood keeps feeding everyone with Americanized / white-washed versions of projects that already exist.

Scarlett was the best actress for the job. Why should a less qualified Asian actress get the roll if Scarlett is better just because she's Asian? That doesn't seem right. Haven't we moved past race? Hmmm.

Oh. You again.

So were YOU the casting manager? did you see all the other actresses that wanted to get a part in the movie? how do you know ScarJo is the most qualified? elaborate. And, yes, race is a huge topic of discussion. Usually conservatives like yourself wont understand **** because yall are full of ignorance.

This thread :saladga:

Here's why this is bad: the character Scarlett is portraying is supposed to be of Japanese origin. The story takes place in Asia and the character has a Japanese name. The story itself is very diverse and there are characters of different races present, so the issue is why they didn't cast the characters that are similar to their anime counterpart (Japanese character to Japanese/Asian actress, white character to a white actress).

Furthermore, a bunch of people are saying that the character herself doesn't look Asian. If you don't watch anime on the regular, then it is relatively difficult to tell Asian from non-Asian characters, but, to Japanese audiences and anime fans there are slight differences. Skin tone, eye shape and color (depending on the realistic attributes the team chooses to follow), etc. all contribute to the race of the character. Yes, anime characters tend to have wide eyes, different colors and features that may differ from natural counterparts in Japan, but, Ghost in the Shell is different. It is much more realistic in terms design, etc. than other anime programs.

Sorry for the rant. It's sad.

I was waiting for the outrage tbh :air: i can actually see the validity with this though. Although people complain Sailor Moon doesn't look Japanese enough so lol

I thought I was the only one saying it. Thank god, I'm not. :rip:

It's probably because the anime self is from Asia, therefore the character needs to be asian. That's what they are trying to point out I guess.. But damn, that character does NOT, again. NOT look like an asian girl.

Anyways, I'm not here to say what's right. I never seen the series, perhaps they need an Asian actress.

I totally understand where you're coming from. Growing up I watched SOME anime and noticed like a lot of characters look white and a few black (brock from pokemon).

Well there probably isn’t a high-profile youthful and WORLDWIDE SUPERSTAR asian actress taht could fit the role so that’s probably the main reason. they need em coins and scarlett johansson attracts people

People hate what they don't understand.

Right. And I mean, the whole point of those remakes is to Americanize and white-wash a project that already exists, and it has been so for decades.... And surprisingly, it is only now that people get mad because "whitewashing" and "cultural appropriation" are hot topics in 2016.... PEOPLE, this has been going on for decades.

If people want diversity, why aren't they watching the original projects with subtitles? Know what I mean.... To adapt the market and see it change, you have to adapt the demand. Hollywood is solely bringing on screen what people want to see.

The effing character is Japanese. They made a Japanese character with a Japanese name who speaks in Japanese, into an white American lady. And there was no audition, Scarlet liked the series and decided to try to make it a film. She shouldn't have played the lead role.

In their defence, The character doesn't look Asian :emma: Just like in Sailor Moon for example; no one looks Asian. I think the problem is not the directors choice, but maybe the original anime. If you want to create a Japanese character, make them look Japanese, and then probably a live action version would have a Japanese actor.
