You're narrowing down a whole culture to two appearance traits. Maybe take into account the perspective of living in the culture itself and the nuances that belong to being Japanese. There are Japanese people who have bigger eyes just like there are white people with smaller eyes and black people with a lighter skin tone. The character could be a Japanese character with bigger eyes. Why is that so hard to believe for some people on here?

Because east asians are the only people that don't have the blue eyed, green eyed and blonde hair trait. Even black people have that trait though it's very rare.

You're missing the point. Anime is a projection of Japanese people with fantasized traits. Some Anime characters even have purple and red eyes and blue hair which no particular race has. However, given the context, Japanese people still see themselves in the characters because the nuances in how the characters act and behave is reminiscent of their culture and customs. So without really explicitly stating it, Anime characters themselves are very Japanese.

They are race neutral more than anything. It's an important distinction that you have to make. Rarely are these characters stereotypical in any sense. It's what's so great about them. They don't look like any race. Big pupils? Weird hair colors? A range of skin tones? Extreme facial features?

That they exhibit Japanese characteristics is a product of them being created by Japanese artists. It doesn't make the characters Japanese in themselves, unless the setting is directly based on a real Japanese location.

You can make the argument that they are culturally Japanese, but that varies from show to show. Some are blatantly based on other Asian cultures, or foreign settings (steampunk for example). Most of the time though, they are only loosely based on the Japanese culture.

Spock

But what about when they cast African American actors in white roles and if you say you don't like it you're  ~racist? That's kind of a double standard

who will love me when the night is over

Then you see the point Anime fans are making? Lol having someone play an Asian character and conveniently not be Asian is weird to them lol just like having a pale white girl with blue eyes play Gaga is weird to you.

But Lady Gaga is an actual person.:laughga: This is a made up story with made up characters. If you google asian remakes of Hollywood movies(it's rare but it happens) you'll see that they cast asians to play the roles and that's the most natural thing to do cause it's an adaptation. If they make a Bollywood movie and base it on a Jane Austen novel(there's actually a tv series lol) they'll make it their own. And btw the Japanese are super cool about these things, they actually like it when people participate in their their culture, wear their traditional clothes ect. As long as you're not doing it with the intention of mocking them they're pretty much down with everything no matter how ridiculous you might look. It's the same when people accused Beyonce of "cultural appropriation" for the Coldplay video and the indians were like "Wtf?!".

So yeah maybe somewhere in the pits of tumblr there are some anime fans that are making some "point" about something but just because it got 5000 notes doesn't validate it. :lolga:

I think there are a few issues to this no matter how we see it.

At one point, one can argue, because of a Japanese name, and being set in Japan (there is no getting around this point) the character is in fact, Japanese, and should be acted by a Japanese actor.

At another point, there should be no problem with an American actress or the rest of the cast due to several other facts. The fact that Asia does the same with its own live action adaptations, by having an entire Japanese/East Asian cast. There is also the fact that while anime and manga existed before the influence of American cartoons, it wasn't famous until influences like Betty Boop.

So the points on both sides are equal.

Lucy Liu's career is far from being at its peak... and even when it was, it didn't compare to a ScarJo, let's be honest for 2 seconds here.
