What about Venus and G.U.Y? Are they really different from The Fame's tracks? What about Pop/Rock gem MANiCURE? EDM's version of Monster aka Swine? MJH? What about The #1 That Got Away aka Gypsy? AP sounds incredibly tinny and cheap in many areas and is overall extremely processed and brick walled in it's own way. Look at the waveforms for MANiCURE for example (the one on the bottom), it sounds like it was made in garageband to begin with and then what little dynamism the track may have had was destroyed in post-processing. This isn't what a song that'd had care and quality put into the recording process looks like: And I'm not trying to drag you lol but your fourth point isn't really saying anything. First of all, if an album requires outside knowledge of context in order for it's critical and thematic content to be understood on any level, rather than read through the music itself, then it's failed as a meaningful piece of work. But ARTPOP doesn't even achieve the former as there's no coherent thematic narrative or critical treatise that can be written about the surrounding context and era in which the music was released that can then be strongly supported by the content of the album itself. I've seen people try to do that and they always end up with a bunch of hot air and non sequiturs that don't apply to anything, similar to Gaga's own meandering explanations of the concepts behind her work during the promotion for the album. You say the album makes a bold statement by being intentionally immature, flat and simple, and that that somehow makes it not lowbrow? But if you do have further elaborations I'd be happy to hear them Thanks for the pro explanation. There was a good thread about ARTPOP's mastering and all. I think you just confirm what a lot of people, including me, have been pointing out. A lot of the depth of the live versions from Swinefest seems to have been lost on the album versions. I'm not a professional, so excuse me if I sound lame, but to be ARTPOP sounds very loud, but I don't know how to explain it, it doesn't lack bass, but it still sounds flat at times, like it's not dynamic, if that makes sense. I guess, ARTPOP is full of contradictions just like its creator. I actually made another post after I quoted you to better explain how I see some of things going on the album. I feel like Gaga may have been tired of being accused of not being talented, of being a gimmick. And you know, she may as well have given us the face that everyone was trying to put on her. You are correct about the hot air around the concept of ARTPOP as well. I personally believe she could put the name on any other album. It's like two different things - the concept with her visuals on one side, and the music on the other. I think the whole idea of art and pop belonging together had a lot of lost potential. I mean, it would have made more sense if all her promises and ideas have been realised. Moreover, ARTPOP is quite irrational album, I don't think one can rationalise something, resulting from passion, pain, recklessness, maybe even carelessness. But I can't deny the connection I felt to the music and Gaga at the time. Maybe I was just as damaged as she was. I mean, at this stage, you can prove all my statements as false and reaching for the stars, but I can't help feeling the bond with it. ARTPOP and BTW imo have a heart in a way. TF and TFM are very exquisite and "cold" albums even though maybe they are much better engineered, and truly show the quality Gaga is capable of. Lastly, another valid criticism of ARTPOP is the idea of it being fun music to dance to. You could say she aimed pretty low with that statement considering her previous releases's scope. She set foot on the way to legendary status at first and with this album she seemed to back off. But my dissatisfaction comes from the fact that for what it is, the album outdid most of the albums released by the mainstream pop acts. So this is a proof the industry sets the bar higher for her (which ultimately should be considered a compliment). I believe, after all this mess, LG5 will be everything AP wasn't. She is in a much better place, with the right people, and has enough time to do the things so that her ideas get a proper execution.
