Pope Francis asks for more support for gays lesbians

Pope Francis put his shoulder to the doors of the Catholic Church and shoved them open a little wider Friday, calling for the church to be more tolerant in practice while not changing any official doctrines.

He urged priests around the world to be more accepting of gays and lesbians, divorced Catholics and other people living in what the church considers "irregular" situations.

"A pastor cannot feel that it is enough simply to apply moral laws ... as if they were stones to throw at people's lives," Francis writes in a sweeping paper outlining his stance on family matters.

He urges more common sense and less unthinking following of rules.

"By thinking that everything is black and white, we sometimes close off the way of grace and growth," he writes.

He emphasizes that "unjust discrimination" against gays and lesbians is unacceptable, downplays the idea of "living in sin" and suggests that priests should use their own discretion on whether divorced Catholics in new marriages can take Communion.

He did however say that people should continue fighting against marriage equality. It's disappointing but hardly surprising. 

In any case marriage equality is nothing compared to the positive side of his message regarding spreading acceptance of gays and lesbians in the developing world. 

Homosexuality remains illegal in too many places, and this message will surely influence many Christians to at least revise their own positions. While homosexuality isn't technically illegal in Lebanon, it's still relatively taboo, and his message resonated with people back home. My mother even talked about it with me the other day. 

So I commend the Pope on this position despite its flaws. It's good to see the leader of the Catholic world take a better stance.

I mean at least he's not calling for stonings.I think this is as progressive and as forward as the pope and the Catholic church can get for now. And even thought some of you will say he's against gay marriage the little he's doing is still huge and very important and (hopefully) it will have more impact than we can imagine in places where Catholicism is the main religion.

Maybe he should tell this to those catholics schools / governments all over the world teaching bigotry, homophobia and transphobia? It's nice to think the Pope is LGBT friendly but if he really wants to help he's not doing much. I remember seeing that his image was used to encourage people to vote against gay marriage, it's ok to have your point of view but, it's contradictory. Especially when religious people use harmful quotes to prove their point.

This Pope has a great PR team I'll admit that.  But he's still extremely homophobic and backwards thinking; he won't be getting any praise from me anytime soon and that's okay as the highest entity of the Catholic church it's not his focal goal.

He can't command them. He just issued a statement. That's all he can do. He's a figure not a commander. Cut him some slack.

But he's the leader of the biggest church in the world. The same one that has major impact on the political decisions taken in third world countries. The reason many countries today don't have any progress regarding LGTB rights is because church fails to stop poking its nose into other people's business. Francis' words might help to those christians who are persecuted (kinda) but not to those countries who seek full equality (same-sex marriage or even civil unions), and the worst thing it's that all these religious people think they're right because their local church (once again Francis CAN do sth) encourages them to do it. Pope Francis might be trying to change the situation and I agree that it's getting better, but until they change their mind millions of lives depend on their stupid point of view. I'm 16... I don't want to wait till I'm 50 to finally have my family recognised by the state. He'd better get his sh*t together.
