Lion Heart 15,041 Posted April 7, 2016 Share Posted April 7, 2016 French MPs have passed a law that makes it illegal to pay for sex and imposes fines of up to €3,750 (£3,027, $4,274) for those buying sexual acts. Those convicted would also have to attend classes to learn about the conditions faced by prostitutes. It has taken more than two years to pass the controversial legislation because of differences between the two houses of parliament over the issue. Some sex workers protested against the law during the final debate. The demonstrators outside parliament in Paris, numbering about 60, carried banners and placards one of which read: "Don't liberate me, I'll take care of myself", the AFP news agency reports. Members of the Strass sex workers' union say it will affect the livelihoods of prostitutes, estimated to number between 30,000 and 40,000. But supporters of the law have said it will help fight trafficking networks. It will also make it easier for foreign prostitutes to get a temporary residence permit in France if they agree to find jobs outside prostitution. "The most important aspect of this law is to accompany prostitutes, give them identity papers because we know that 85% of prostitutes here are victims of trafficking," Socialist MP Maud Olivier, who sponsored the legislation, told the Associated Press news agency. Why would I get a job as a waiter at Starbucks for a week and get paid minimum wage, when I get paid more than that for spending 30 minutes with a guy or two or three? jezze0410 395 Posted April 7, 2016 Share Posted April 7, 2016 It is certainly an improvement over the status quo, wherein the act of prostitution is itself illegal; this law tries to shift the legal responsibility to the one paying for the prostitution (prosecuting the buyer rather than the seller, in other words). While admirable insofar as it treats prostitutes as victims rather than criminals and it protects those forced into the industry, I find it horribly misguided. Those who actively entered the industry, be it out of choice or desperation, have every right to make their own autonomous decisions, and will continue to do so. Outlawing paying for sex will not only severely affect their income, but also drive the industry further underground. Surely the Dutch model of legal, well-regulated prostitution is the way to go? It's time ppl realize prostitution can either: (1) be seen as business and as entertainment to a lot of ppl - and just bc it's not what my morals says to be right, it doesn't mean ppl will stop seeking prostitutes or that prostitution shouldn't be elevated to a job like any other -, so it can be regulated, taxes can be collected, the government can be present and control what's going on... or (2) be made illegal, which takes the government out of the equation and puts the shadiest ppl you can imagine in charge, making it a public health and public security problem - which means not only taxes won't be collected, but also money will be spent to counteract the negative effects from making it a marginal thing...
