DiscoHeaven23 35,007
With the primaries coming up on Tuesday in Utah, eyes have shifted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons). Apparently, those of the Mormon faith are not too keen on Donald Trump and its not because of Mitt Romney. While Mormons are known to be conservative, their values are vastly different than those of many conservative Trump supporters. Mormons support paths to citizenship for illegal immigrants as long as they are law abiding citizens. The Mormon church supports freedom of religion and has already publicly disagreed with Trump's views on keeping Muslims out of the US. To add to that, there are other more predictable reasons Mormons aren't on board with Trump, "His blatant religious illiteracy, his penchant for onstage cursing, his habit of flinging crude insults at women, his less-than-virtuous personal life, and widely chronicled marital failures — all of this is anathema to the wholesome, family-first lifestyle that Mormonism promotes. And demographically speaking, Mormons tend to reside outside Trump’s base of support anyway. They have higher-than-average education levels, whereas Trump does best among voters without any college education; they are more likely to be weekly churchgoers, while Trump performs better with Christians who attend services infrequently." On Immigration "The LDS Church has spent years lobbying for “compassionate” immigration reform. In 2011, church leaders offered a full-throated endorsement of “the Utah Compact,” a state legislative initiative that discouraged deporting otherwise law-abiding undocumented immigrants, and offered a path to residency for families that would be separated by deportation. These pro-immigrant attitudes are common among rank-and-file believers, many of whom have served missions in Latin-American countries. Mormons are more than twice as likely as evangelicals to say they support “more immigration” to the United States, according to Notre Dame political scientist David Campbell. And a 2012 Pew survey found that Mormons were more likely to say immigrants “strengthen” the country than they were to call immigrants an overall “burden.” On the Muslims "Last year, when the billionaire proposed banning all Muslims from entering the United States in the wake of the San Bernardino terrorist attack, Trump became the only candidate in either party this election cycle to elicit a response from LDS church leadership. “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is neutral in regard to party politics and election campaigns. However, it is not neutral in relation to religious freedom,” the statement read, before proceeding to quote the faith’s 19th-century founder, Joseph Smith, saying he would “die in defending the rights of … any other denomination who may be unpopular and too weak to defend themselves.” (In case the message wasn’t clear enough, the church-owned Deseret News went on to publish a story highlighting the growing alliance and solidarity between Mormon and Muslim leaders.)" At least they're proposing to make a reform for those who are already here to keep families together, unlike Dump, who assumes getting rid of people would fix the problem (when it won't). UDO 35
what about the person of color, who happens to be a Trump supporter, who happened to punch and kick a protester multiple times, isn't that a more important article to post on gagadaily (because trump supporters beating up trump protesters is such an important topic here) why aren't you posting that? I think Mormons were really pushing for Mitt Romney and since a contested Republican convention could put him back on the ballot almost automatically depending on what Republican leadership decide, it might give him another chance at the Presidency. Trump has managed to alienate Hispanics on immigration, Muslims in general, women in general, the Republican establishment itself, many Democrats outright hate him, and if Mormons are out against him, he may have a tougher fight going forward in other states and nationally. For him to move forward might mean he needs to patch up some PR and win over some defectors from each group which has happened before somehow. If such groups coordinate together over this common foe, they could start quality fundraisers and help turn out the vote for Bernie or Hillary, I still think by combining forces (one go VP for the other, they could easily crush whatever comes out of the Republican convention, just my two cents. Stand in the light, cast your shadow.
