200 million women and girls in 30 countries across the world have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM). But in Somalia, where an astounding 98% of girls are cut, the Minister for Women is developing a ban right now. Local experts say that a global wave of support for nationwide zero tolerance could help win an outright ban on this cruel practice in weeks!

When women are circumcised, they dont feel anything sexually the rest of their life.. this mostly happen in Africa as it is an African tradition and has nothing with religion as all religions in Africa practice this.

Watch this video about mele circumcision:

To be the devil's advocate because we had this similar discussion in an Anthropology class, why is it we are trying to impose our western standards to end these practices. If it is part of their culture and all culture is deemed equal and valuable then why are we imposing our views for them to stop. Where should the line between ethics and morality be drawn? I think think it is always good to find out the views of the culure we are trying to decide for.

I signed it btw and I think it is unsafe. It's just that we had a roleplay activity in Anthropology and you have to consider the people who are engaging in this practice. If the woman willingly agrees to it are we to stop her from doing a culutral ritual? If it is someone underage and held down do we hold her to same standards? To some of them it is very prestigious and honorable to do these practices. Are we going to ignore what they want and tell them to ban it because we think it is wrong? Is this another kind of Westernization that we want them to adapt by removing these "barbaric and inhumane" practices? I think this subject is really deeper not only for the health of the women but also in a larger political and social scale.

I would make the argument that culture should never come before human rights. Westernization is a good thing if it's protecting people from oppression.

In Europe where i was from (Portugal) they never even asked if u wanted to be circumsized it just wasnt a thing, unless you specifically requested it, they didnt do it

So when i moved to Canada i found it strange that up until 1990 most baby boys were circumsized. Then they changed it and now you also gotta ask or they will assume you dont want to do it.

the way i see it, the foreskin helps protect the tip of the penis and preserves sensitivity that aids in sexual pleasure. The only advantage of getting cut is more cleanliness but if your not a pig and wash regularly there that isnt an issue.

As for female circumzision i knew it existed but didnt think it was a big thing.

I read that men and older women did this to their wives and daughters because they want women to not cheat. There was a famous survivor who wrote a bestselling book (I forgot the name, unfortunately) who wrote about her village doing it because they want full control over their women. A woman that is taught that female genitals are for reproduction only will let the men impregnate her easier and basically be less resistant to oppression. At least that's what she said the men believe and it's horrible. :ohno:
