AJH219 4,448
Hillary Clinton seems to need some reminding about what happened in the early days of the AIDS epidemic. The Democratic presidential candidate made polarizing, inaccurate -- not to mention offensive -- comments on Friday about the role that the Reagans, specifically Nancy Reagan, played in combatting the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s. Speaking to MSNBC during the televised funeral for Reagan, who died on Sunday at the age of 94 from congestive heart failure, Clinton claimed that Nancy and her husband "started a national conversation" about the AIDS epidemic when "nobody would talk about it." She said: "It may be hard for your viewers to remember how difficult it was for people to talk about HIV/AIDS back in the 1980s. And because of both President and Mrs. Reagan -- in particular Mrs. Reagan -- we started a national conversation. When before nobody would talk about it, nobody wanted to do anything about it, and that too is something that I really appreciate with her very effective, low key advocacy but it penetrated the public conscious and people began to say, 'Hey, we have to do something about this too.'" For that, I'm sorry." 'All our dreams can come true IF we have the courage to pursue them'-Walt Disney

Mikey Monster 1,561
Though it's sad Nancy has passed may she rest in peace. I was not a fan of her husband but may he rest in peace as well. No offence to the Reagan's but they were not the first to bring up AIDS. In fact, they ignored it for the first few years of it breaking out. It started in 1981 and it was prominent in the gay community and Gay men were dropping like flies left and right. Amazing people like Larry Kramer created the Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC) and spoke out and tried SO hard to get Reagan's attention so they can fund money for research for medication for it and hopefully a cure. Reagan and his administration ignored them because in my opinion it wasn't affecting "them as in straight people and it was just a "Gay Disease" and thought they would let them die off. By the time Reagan FINALLY publicly spoke out about AIDS it was 1985 4 or 5 years after the virus broke out and over 24,000 people had already died from AIDS! He said AIDS research would be his "Top Priority" then a year later he cut spending for it 11%. Today, 30 million people and counting men and woman, Gay and straight, have died from HIV/AIDS, including my mothers cousin in 1997. It's so annoying to hear politicians praise Reagan as some kind of GOD to them because all I think of when it comes to Reagan is a man that ignored an epidemic until it started affecting "Straight" people and politicians. I don't wish any ill will toward the family but it's just my opinion. Mikey McCampbell

But YES exactly! that is the perfect example his friend Rock Hudson thank you for pointing that out <3 it just makes me mad that so many people died and maybe we could have saved more people if we weren't so afraid of the words "Gay" and "AIDS" it breaks my heart Mikey McCampbell

You are correct when you say you couldn't even say the words "Gay" or "AIDS" back then, because you honestly couldn't! SMH Egypt. W
