Student gets told she is worthless by teacher for asking question in class

Shaniaya Hunter, a junior at Green County High School, was recording her lessons on her school-issued iPad in December when, she says, she asked the teacher a question and he became upset. She alleges that the teacher called her “dumb” and added that her “purpose was to have sex and children.”

The comments were recorded on the iPad, WSB-TV reports. A male voice can be heard on the recording saying, “I have been around 37 years, and clearly, you are the dumbest girl I have ever met. ... You know what your purpose is going to be? To have sex and have children because you ain’t never gonna be smart.”

“It really hurt me inside,” Shaniaya told the news station. “I don’t think it’s OK. I don’t think he should be here.”

Shaniaya’s mom, Cathy Wright, reported the incident to the school district but was dissatisfied with the response. She said that she doesn’t know if the teacher was ever disciplined, but added that he still teaches at the school.

Attorney Ben Windham took the case pro bono after learning of the incident.

“This man does not need to be teaching young children. It's not a gray area. End of story,” Windham said.

WSB-TV contacted Greene County Schools to find out if any action had been taken against the teacher. According to the news station, the school district would respond only by saying that there were limits to what it could say publicly.

She's a junior in High School. And omg is it really? If any of my professors or lecturers said anything like that, they would not able to find a job after they get dragged by the university board to the pits of hell. That sounds really disturbing.

I would be damned if I paid tuition for a teacher to call me derogatory names and put me down. That's not what an educator does. I heard that law school professors are brutal, but that's an entirely different situation.

Regardless, he said that to a child and that's ****ed up. I don't care how problematic the child is, or what is going on in your life. If you can't handle conducting yourself in a professional manner, then don't be a teacher. We all have bad days, but this is unacceptable.

I have no idea how these disgusting people are allowed to be teachers. If one got angry and said a hurtful thing, and regretted it later, well that's absolutely normal because we're all human and we all mess up. But what he said was WAY over the top. Absolutely repulsing.

If they are caught, you mean. The thing is, students are afraid of professors, I myself am a witness of really shitty things professors have done and nobody, including me, did anything and when something bad happens the authorities almost never find out BUT, fortunately, this is a thing that's changing.

I was called a fag once by my lecturer just because i knew what nivea and pantene is...and i couldn't do anything since he is kind of the most valued professor in this college. He pretty much is the most important person (and also the oldest i think)

I'd like to comment that some people can be very slow learners and people may laugh because they're perceived to be "dumb" etc. but the important thing is that they are willing to LEARN. At lease they aren't willingly staying ignorant like A LOT of "educated" people do as they put down others without the same knowledge as them. You can shove your degree up your sweaty ass for all I care. The only people who deserve being criticized are those that are closed minded and refuse to learn.

What a shitty thing to say... Students go to school to get educated. Questions are a given. He could have asked her to see him after class to explain the answer. That was rude, unprofessional, and not anything a teacher should be saying to children.

I'm glad we live in an age where people are becoming more accountable for what they say thanks to technology. Hopefully actions eventually gets taken against him.
