*=charted higher than I thought it would when I started doing this

I included the short edit of the PlanitB remix cuz it's really my favorite thing Utada's ever done, and the original version of the remix is just way too long/has too much of that "remix filler." I wish we had studio versions of Devil Inside, Kremlin Dusk, and You Make Me Want to Be a Man that sounded like the live versions from Utada United, cuz those were amazing and definitely made me like the songs more. Also, "On and On" with a better production (and without the guy screaming) would be legendary.

PopReaper's Utada English Songs Rankings:

Spoiler

Tier 1 - Best of the best:
1. Simple & Clean
2. Kremlin Dusk
3. Sanctuary (Opening) + (Ending)
4. Devil Inside

Tier 2 - Really great:
5. By Your Side (feat. Timbaland & Kiley Dean)
6. Automatic Part II
7. Do You (feat. Ne Yo)
8. Blow My Whistle (feat. Foxy Brown)
9. This One (Crying Like A Child)
10. Me Muero

Tier 3 - Not as great as the previous tiers but still pretty good:
11. Apple and Cinnamon
12. Exodus '04
13. Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence
14. Taking My Money Back
15. Face My Fears
16. Dirty Desire

Tier 4 - Nice enough:
17. Let Me Give You My Love
18. Animato
19. Easy Breezy
20. Don't Think Twice
21. Come Back to Me
22. You Make Me Want to Be a Man
23. On And On

Tier 6 - It's getting weird... not terrible though:
24. Poppin'
25. Tippy Toe
26. Crossover (Interlude)
27. Opening (Intro)
28. About Me

Tier 7 - [Alyssa Edwards voice] Wtf is going on in here on this day:
29. Wonder 'Bout
30. Hotel Lobby
31. The Workout

General thoughts: This Is The One is my favorite out of her two English albums as I find it consistently good. On the other hand, Exodus is much more daring, so even though it has some real stinkers, when it lands it really lands, meanwhile This Is The One, even at it's best, is still kinda basic (my kind of basic though). Also, some of those lyrics really are something else.. :flop: The way Utada goes from "My neighbor just died" to "I wanna have sex right now" within the first six lines on Let Me Give You My Love nnnn :laughga: And the "[Countess LuAnn voice] Girls, you know we have it better than the boys..." + "Honeys if you're gay burn it up like a gay parade" moments on Poppin' and On and On respectively are both camp classics imo...

Fun Fact: The K in KPop stands for "Kate Bush"

Queendom almost feels too low-key to be a title track but it's cute, I enjoy it. Knock On Wood and Better Be are great :legend:

lmaoooo yeah a lot of her English lyrics are questionable

We both agree The Workout is the worst thing she's ever done haha

I really like Hotel Lobby, the lyrics are way too on-the-nose and the intro lasts forever, but the chorus makes up for it imo

I did not expect to see all her early-2000s collabs rank so highly, you must really like that r&b sound. Automatic Part II though... choices

tbh I used to think I liked This Is The One more, but when I was doing this ranking I was struck by how basic it all was. I really like MCML-FYI  and This One (Crying Like a Child), but most of it is so skippable especially the second half. Exodus has some absolutely dreadful songs (Wonder Bout nnnn) but just like you said, when it lands it really lands.

dddd yeah I'm here for anything with that early/mid-2000's Timbaland sound. I don't think Hotel Lobby is terrible (the only truly terrible one is The Workout :sis:), it has interesting parts and I appreciate the quirks in the production but it veers into being a bit obnoxious because of how heavyhanded it feels (which is the same problem I have with the other Exodus songs that ranked low). Some Exodus tracks also kinda remind me of early 2000's Madonna for whatever reason (specially Exodus 04's second verse)

In other (J-Pop) news: Chanmina just announced her third full album, dropping October 13th:legend: The teaser video she posted on her IG features scenes from a few of her most recent MVs tho, so I guess we're getting an EP-sized amount of new tracks + some old ones, repackaged :emma:

nnnn if she puts "Never Grow Up (acoustic version)" on the new album :smh: girl that was already on an album, you named the album after it.

But that would also make it three years in a row that song makes my JPop top 10 :sis:

It's like Blackpink Lite.  Song even sounds like parts of Kill this Love.
