Irrelevant 20,280
I just realized the other 3 girls are in the my karina teaser at 0:59 Also: Spoiler "It's rumored that SM Entertainment's new rookie girl group aespa consists of 4 members - Winter, Karina, NingNing, and Aeri. (NingNing is Chinese, Aeri is Japanese.) But while aespa will debut as 4 members, the group is based on a universe, which likely means that the universe will grow and add more members with each new story. This could be considered a unique take on the NCT concept of an unlimited number of members." can't believe a female nct is coming. also can't believe lami koeun and hina left for this to happen anyways I kinda wish their AI concept flops like NCT Dream concept and they can just exist as a female nct and i also just read this thing on youtube and i kinda understand now why people are annoyed at the AI concept Spoiler Imagine training at SM for years only to be told that you can't debut because you've been replaced with not just anyone but ... an AI with crappy CGI. Literally my mind is blown and I cannot believe this is happening. Do you know how many ethical questions this raises? So basically what happened was that SM is debuting a new girl group, aespa. All was well and good and they'd released the teaser photos for two members so far, Winter and Karina. But then out of nowhere they drop this trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuguH...) featuring none other than Karina and ... an AI version of her? The AI is called ae-Karina and is basically a virtual being who is Karina's friend, looks like Karina, and also talks like Karina. ae-Karina has her own social media profiles, kind of like Seraphine from League of Legends but with worse animations. You are supposed to stan ae-Karina along with real Karina. In fact, Lee Soo-man himself said that aespa was to have 8 members, 4 of whom are real people and 4 of whom are the ae versions of them. The purpose of these virtual members is to increase fan interaction, because these computer programs will be able to chat with an infinite number of fans at once and do an infinite number of performances. SM said that anyone can have the virtual members in their pocket, in their home, all the time, basically (that sounds a lot like incel bait to me, but I digress). Now this is both a stroke of genius, but also raises serious ethical concerns. Who owns these AIs? They are based on the image and personalities of the real idols, but owned by the company. Do the idols get paid for appearances of their virtual selves? SM is blurring the line between virtual beings and real people in a way that hasn't been done before. Sure, we have virtual groups like K/DA, but it is clear that the members of K/DA are characters. No one is saying that Soyeon and Miyeon ARE Akali and Ahri just because they voice and perform as those characters. But SM is saying that Karina is equally as valid of a personality as her virtual counterpart. This is in fact exactly reminiscent of Seraphine, a character in the same universe as K/DA but who produces her "own" songs and runs her "own" social media profiles. Do we know who is voicing Seraphine like we know that Soyeon voices Akali? No, we don't, and that's the problem. By introducing these ae members, SM is removing the rate limiting step from idol groups -- the physical capabilities of the idols. A robot can never have mental health issues, become tired, get into a scandal, or be bound by workplace safety laws. This is only the next level of what SM was already doing with NCT, because NCT having infinite members means that they can do infinite activities, never disband, and the members themselves are easily replaceable. Having the members not be real people only makes this same process easier. The message that SM is sending here is clear. Idols are a replaceable CONCEPT, not people. When presented with something and told to stan, we will stan. When NCT first came out, people thought the concept was absurd, but now look at where NCT is: at the top of the market. I'm betting the same thing will happen with aespa. What do you think about these ae members? Will people accept this as a legitimate group? In what ways do you think SM will continue to push the envelope? Edited October 28, 2020 by Irrelevant 광야로 걸어가 알아 네 home ground
