The same day that 26 people died in the Newtown, Connecticut shooting, there was a mass stabbing in China by a deranged man... and every single victim lived and recovered fully. Because he didn't have a gun. To your second point, not every person who commits a horrible crime is mentally ill. Some are on drugs, some are crimes of passion, others are just evil. The rush to assume mental illness after every single shooting is Republicans' way of distracting from the issue of there being way too many guns in this country. And that's how it's BOTH! We don't like in a world where guns can magically disappear bro. China can do it because they don't have any freedoms, and the central government is strong enough to impose communist restrictions on trade. Trade will never be restricted in America like that, there will always be black markets. Trust me dude, I would LOVE to live in the hypothetical world you're talking about. But we can't simply make guns disappear; crazy people will ALWAYS get their hands on a gun if we outlaw/restrict them to commit a crime. That's why it isn't BOTH! We don't like in fairytale fun land! If you look at the data, gun ownership =/= gun violence, and gun control does not equal lower gun violence either. That is purely just date. It cannot not be argued with; it's just statistical fact. So when people say gun control is the answer to acts of violence like this, I just have no clue what they're talking about. This attack is a tragedy, but let's not blame it on an inanimate object. It's clearly a mental health case. Are you guys serious? A European woman chopped a baby's head off earlier this week and was swinging it around in the streets of the city. Did you see one f*cking member of this site say "LOL WTF IS WRONG WITH THE EUROPEANS?! Come on!" I'll answer that for you -- you didn't. No American said "Holy sh*t Paris, you need to get your sh*t together" after the attacks last year. Offer you condolences in this tragic situation and move on with your bratty lives. Like Jesus Christ, grow up and be respectful. I'm not chatting about the American people, I'm saying that US lawmakers need to get some control over gun ownership. Guns are far too prevalent, and to let so many people own one just invites these kinds of tragedy.

In fact, some of the strictest in the nation. Yet, their gun violence rates are among the highest!!!! Texas on the other hand has almost no gjn control, has the highest gun ownership rate, and yet has the lowest gun violence rate! So tell me again why the south is crazy with guns when it's liberal northern states that are the most violent with guns...

Or how about total gun control in which citizens aren't allowed guns except in exceptional circumstances? Texas may indeed have lower levels of violence, but it is still rather high compared to places that have an almost total ban, like if you compare it to most of Europe. (receipts - http://www.texasobserver.org/mass-shooting-2015-texas/ and http://www.humanosphere.org/science/2015/10/visualizing-gun-deaths-comparing-u-s-rest-world/) I do not for the life of me understand why America thinks more guns = less violence. It's mind-blowing. I have conversations with friends about this (I'm from London, BTW) and it confuses the hell out of us. The answer seems so obvious - take away the right to have guns. Taking away the right to own a gun does not magically make all the gun disappear. Why do you not understand that. The HUGE gun market in America would just turn into a black market allowing only criminals to own guns. Not to mention the black market from Mexico into souther America. They already **** hundreds of thousands of TONS of illegal drugs and narcotics. They could easily do the same with guns. I would love to live in the magical fairytale land you've described where we could wave a wand and all of our problems would go away, but unfortunately I and the rest of America live in the real world. Also, it is a statistical FACT that states with less gun control and more ownership have less gun violence. In cities where it is hard for normal people to get a handgun for protection because of gun control (allowing only criminals to illegal obtain guns), there is MORE gun violence. Draw your own conclusions.

Buddy, you're the one that is straight up IGNORING the fact that gun ownership and gun violence have an inverse relationship! You won't even acknowledge the fact! Quote me again when you're ready to join the real world with the rest of us I literally stated that: "Texas may indeed have lower levels of violence, but it is still rather high compared to places that have an almost total ban, like if you compare it to most of Europe. I also have said that I understand that a ban could not be imposed immediately. You're the one that is till spouting the same point over and over again. I have read what you have had to say and adapted accordingly. P.S The bolded part of your wuote may be a fact in the case of Texas v NY/Cali, but it is not a fact when appropriated out onto a worldwide model. Problem is, you can't compare it on a worldwide model. The US is not the UK, it is not the Netherlands, it is not Australia. You cannot just take historical and constitutional context out of the conversation. To that extent, geography also matter. None of the countries with low gun violence rates also share half there boarder with Mexico, a collapsed government and a country run by illegal black market lords. You cannot continue to ignore these extremely significant contextual factors. You've developed no actual solution other that "Yeah well look at these other places halfway across the damn world that are nothing like America either in the present or the past and have none of the geographical problems it faces. They're doing just fine!" Give me a break.
ctherainbow 3,162
Well, if it's not a case where there are extenuating mental health circumstances, then damn, somebody did not raise that child right. Assaulting your family because they wanted you to get up for school? On a side note, I really have to agree with @MJHolland on how rude a lot of non-US users are when tragedies happen in the US and are posted here. I've never personally seen a US user go into a thread about a tragedy elsewhere in the world and say, "DAMN, get your **** together!". It's just tired and rude to do that, and ya'll know any US user would be dragged to hell if they went into a thread and said something like "Well, damn, Gaza, just crack down on Hamas and your lives won't be wrecked every few years by the IDF". It's just not constructive at all. Yes, we in the US know we're not perfect and have **** to get together. Literally no American I know thinks that we're the best thing on the face of the planet. Maybe that's what the media and advertising would have you believe, but we know we're flawed. Perhaps we could have a gun control/gun violence master thread like they have for the Syrian crisis. That might help shift the focus of individual incident threads back to the loss of life and not embroil those threads in the neverending gun control debate here on GGD. @Haroon, I dunno the mod for the World News section; could you maybe direct this idea to them? Thx! I'm talkin' 'bout forever, baby.

LeoFameMonster 1,592
I love he attempted to murder his family for waking him up for school and the only thing that comes from this is what time kids wake up from school. Yes because the biggest issue in the story was that time kids get up for school. Last time I checked I woke up that same time and never thought of getting a gun and shooting anyone! Where is the report on gun control or how a 16 boy can get a gun?? Only in America

The woman and the child's head case happened in Russia not in Europe (don't come at me for separating Russia - yeas geographically it is a European and Asian country, but this nation doesn't share the European values so while being "here" Russians aren't really part of the European community and believe me, they insist on that a lot). The critique is harsh indeed but it's only because the USA has that image of the leading nation of the world. And if such things happen to the "leaders" that's bad, and indicates sth needs to change if you are to keep that status, that's it. No hateful jab or offense meant!
