lego 44,165
Iowa Dem rips Republicans for bill that would let children carry guns: ‘We do not need a militia of toddlers’ Iowa legislators passed legislation that would allow small children to possess firearms. The bill passed the Iowa House and is now headed to the state Senate with strong opposition from minority Democrats, according to Iowa Public Radio. “You’re missing the whole point of the bill,” Republican Jake Highfill told an uneasy Democrat. “I think this is one of the best bills we’ve done for second amendment rights.” The bill would allow anyone under the age of 14 to handle handguns under adult supervision, with no age limit. “We do not need a militia of toddlers,” Democrat Kirsten Running-Marquardt said of the bill. “We do not have handguns that I am aware of that fit the hands of a 1-or-2-year-old.” Democrat Mary Mascher also pointed out that “Every three hours in this country a child dies from gun violence.” According to Iowa Public Radio, the Iowa House also passed bills that allow people riding snowmobiles to carry loaded firearms, and also keep weapons permits confidential. The bills passed in spite of a stream of accidental shootings involving children. On Tuesday, the 12-year-old daughter of an Idaho militiaman was accidentally shot during a meeting and wounded. Even the presence of trained adults doesn’t guarantee the prevention of accidents. In 2014, a 9-year-old girl accidentally shot and killed a firearms instructor in Arizona. http://www.rawstory.com/2016/02/iowa-dem-rips-republicans-for-bill-that-would-let-children-carry-guns-we-do-not-need-a-militia-of-toddlers/ FreePalestine

Yeah, I'm usually pro more restrictions on gun ownership and whatnot, but this kind of legislation is actually better for gun safety as a whole. It's promoting guns as hobby items, not items meant for protection and violence. We'd be starting kids at a young age to use guns appropriately, instead of the way America tends to view them nowadays. If you look at Switzerland (or is it Sweden?) where the rate of gun ownership is freakishly high and gun violence/deaths is freakishly low, their population will tell you it's because of how they view and treat guns- as hobby items, not as weapons- which causes them to be smarter about it. If we could bring that mentality over to the states, where guns are considered a savior and a weapon of destruction, we could actually lessen gun violence. EDIT: While I grew up in a hunting family and most of my cousins knew how to work a gun at a young age, it's not something I'd do for my imaginary children or something I'd have sunny thoughts about, but I see it for what it is. Villifying anything that has to do with guns can be just as bad as loving anything that has to do with guns. We need to reach a smart compromise to really fix the issues. It should be "only in designated areas" instead of "supervised by an adult" since the supervision of an adult doesn't equate supervision of a responsible adult. It's not confusing and there's no problems I see with it. What designated area? A parent or guardian or spouse who is twenty-one years of age or older, of a person under the age of twenty-one may allow the person to possess a pistol or revolver or the ammunition therefor for any lawful purpose while under the direct supervision of the parent or guardian or spouse who is twenty-one years of age or older, or while the person receives instruction in the proper use thereof from an instructor twenty-one years of age or older, with the consent of such parent, or guardian or spouse. As used in this section, “direct supervision” means supervision provided by another person who maintains visual and verbal contact at all times with the supervised person. A shooting range or places where responsible people are around to make sure children are safe and everyone around them is safe. It's ridiculous to think parental supervision is enough safe for children to carry a deadly weapon.
Alex C 254
Meanwhile a natural plant like Marijuana remains illegal. Also, as toddlers get to have guns, adults are not permitted to do what they want to their bodies (aka legalize all drugs). I think our world is going in dangerous directions. ISIS on the East, overly-PC wars on the west... I am afraid of the future. Perform Living

I'm from Sweden and you're spot on with your description of the gun mentality here. I grew up in a hunter family and if I ever went near one of dad's hunting rifles I got dragged by him. He taught me to have great respect for weapons and what their purpose was. They were also locked up in this reinforced safety lockets most of the times (which they must be by law, and the locket has to be registred and must be placed at the same address that you're registred living at). I think our laws for getting a license also has a good balance for keeping out the nuts (you're only able to get a license for sports and hunting here, not for the sake of just having a gun for the lolz)
