There are SO many things I want to say but the comments here really interesting. As a boy who grew up in the 90's, I used to love Britney during her Baby One More Time - Oops albums. I stopped listening to her when she released I'm A Slave 4 U because it was not poppy anymore and I thought it was way too urban (Dumb, because the music got more interesting with that), and I also skipped In The Zone (which is my favorite Britney album right now) because I didn't really pay that much attention to her but I still knew about her hit singles in high school. Of course, there were more and more artists and bands out there and Britney was not my main focus so I stopped following her career. Her breakdown was all over the news and so was her "comeback" album Blackout, which I skipped, then I listened to Womanizer and liked it, slowly started listening to her again.

I'm gonna have to say that Britney is a legend for what she has achieved as a performer. She was a good dancer back then, the BRITNEY brand is worth a lot of money because of that time during BOMT - In The Zone but the standard of pop music has changed. Some fans now choose to listen to artists who actually sing live, and some others who grew up with Britney and loved her back then are still her fans and STILL think she's an icon in spite of her lazy live performances, especially the gay ones who get super defensive of her, which bores me to death.

I like Britney, I have fun listening to her music sometimes but I don't respect her as an artist. It's been years since she really stopped caring about her career and she only does things because she HAS to and because of the money. People keep saying "Britney's back" but she really isn't and she never will. Britney became a mom and stopped caring about her career, she's just doing stuff because they don't want to let the brand fade away.

I really agree with this, she's only in it for the money now and she said so herself she's in it for the fun, she sees making music as a fun thing, not as a passion.

WOW I didn't know there was so much hatred in this forum. She is a strong, hard working woman with a sad story.

She doesn't want to be famous anymore, but she is under a permanent conservatorship by her step-father and therefore is forced to continue working and generate profit.

I've never heard a soul outside of pop music fans say a good word about Britney Spears.

(I love her FYI)

This. Her management chose some bops, she is a good dancer, and possesses a certain magnetic quality. But she is the very definition of a manufactured pop star. Nearly everything that has been iconic or noteworthy about career, artistically speaking, has been someone else's doing.

That's wrong, some of her iconic performances are her ideas, most of her music videos are her ideas. Baby One More Time music video was her idea. So no, your statement is wrong.

She deserves no respect as a human

She was literally the #1 paparazzi target for YEARS. They even made a documentary about a group of paps following Britney exclusively. I remember the photographer who had the shot of her shaving her head made $350,000 of just ONE photograph or maybe it was even more. People tried to ruin her, her breakdown kept thousands of people entertained. The internet wasn't what it is today and tabloid culture was at an all-time high and she was the perfect target. Broken by mental illness and superstardom. Saying she doesn't deserve respect is disgusting. How dare you? You don't know her, you can't wish ill upon anyone ever but ESPECIALLY not on someone who you don't know and who hasn't done anything to hurt someone else. People DROVE her to madness, how can you not see that?

No need to get personal guys. We can all just agree to disagree. :)

Honestly, I think it's like this: people in the industry seem to like her as a person because she is supposedly really sweet and a pleasure to work with (especially when she is in a good point in her life). Her brand is definitely respected, or was from '99 - '05 (?), because she really was a big power player at her peak. A person could argue to her talent or skills, but she was highly marketable and brought the big, big dollars. As a performer, she definitely had some pull, because her choreography (at least during her peak) was highly mimicked and praised. She was a very good dancer and had very memorable moves (I think it was her decision to use the chair in the Stronger video). I also know that she dealt with a huge amount of criticism I think since Oops for her lip-syncing. People made fun of her for that. Then there was the alleged boob job and the claims of being virginal with an image that slowly became more and more provocative and sexual (though it could be argued it's been like that since the Baby video and the Rolling Stone cover). Back at her peak when she was considered one of THE sex symbols and was selling like crazy, I think the general consensus was that she was something of a mix as an artist. I think though even she would admit that as much as she tried to take control over her career, she was constantly pushed back by her label and management, and over-ruled. Maybe she was scared at losing everything. I know that this all played a big part in her meltdown. And after that meltdown, her brand hasn't been the same since.

I do like Britney though, I'm so glad she and her family are in a much better and happier place (I think the fear of losing her kids was the thing that most helped her recover). I've been a closeted fan for years (she was not popular among my indie/rock/metal friends). I do hope this next era sees her doing well. I'd like for her to take complete control over her work.

Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."

Damn, yet another hit thread for me :applause:

i truly pity my haters :applause:

I mean it was an interesting discussion but I also got the feeling that you made this thread to have a few britney haters make fun of her but it backfired since most gaga fans adore britney and most of the britney hate comments in this thread come from ShockPop who I cant take seriously since he supports Dr Luke and Donald Trump. Britney likes Gaga and Gaga will always love Britney.

And btw I didn't even answer to the question, yes I do respect her a lot BIG TIME as a human, a survivor!

But as an artist and a singer she could do so much better, she built a brand that has so much more potential, all it would take for her is to do what Gaga is doing, to rebuild her brand to showcase her talent (or what is left of it) cause honestly she's seen as a random pop star who has some tunes to bop to and that's sad cause she's so much more but I think she is at a point where she doesn't even care what people think of her and she seems to not have anymore that energy and that will to shut people's mouths.

So I respect her as a human but I could respect her as an artist and a singer if she took time to rebuild her brand to embrace and showcase her talent (which will probably never happen but whatever anyway I'll always have Gaga if I want to look up to an artist and I'll have Britney as a human inspiration).
