    • no, she's seen as an untalented and generic fluke who ruined pop music and is now forgotten

Madonna built it, European pop girls built it. Britney did nothing. Just a vessel for cash.

She never really "came back" and she caused the breakdown herself. If she wasn't on drugs she wouldn't have risked losing her kids and wouldn't have had to shave her head to avoid drug testing.

Her hits are few and far between and ultimately mean nothing to the industry. She didn't change the industry in any way.

What's worse is that she wasn't in control of anything. She was a marketing gimmick and that's all. Kudos to her management for making money.

pretty much this

madonna never did an all-american southern girl turned bad

circus, etc were a comeback because they brought in lots of hits and publicity (both bad and good). she shaved her head because she was literally mentally unwell and believed that there were wires in her brain.

I believe she is, she was the power figure who cause bubble gum pop female acts went rampant in late 90s to mid 2000s, if there wasn't Britney, there weren't many copies of her in the making these days.

After her first two phenomenal albums, all record labels realised that Pop solo female can be bankable too, there weren't anyone after Mariah Carey days that could do that.

Then they were on a race, to sign their own Britney, Mandy Moore, and Jessica Simpsons were some of them. Even P!nk regret what L.A.Reid asked her to do to be bankable for the label (by being another Britney) on one of her song.

As a popstar? I can't with the fact that she is lip syncing almost her entire career. How could you watch a show with a girl that only dances? I mean, actually she has the same career as her back-up dancers because they are doing the same job. Just sing live! And if you can't than you just a dancer and not a pop-star

What caused her breakdown? Everyone talks about it but idk what caused it..

She had a slow building breakdown at some point after In The Zone, I think there were signs prior though. I think what happened was that she tried rebelling against the tight hold her management and label had on her and it wound up backfiring. Her first marriage was a quickie in Vegas to an old flame, which I'm sure she was partially pressured by her management to end because it was something of a mini scandal. Then she hooked up with Federline who already had a kid out of wedlock with another woman, whom he seemingly abandoned really quickly. Everyone hated him because they thought he was a shady gold-digger and Britney was funding his debut album. Most people I know still blame him for her downfall, but I think she was going through something much deeper than that. Anyway, he got her pregnant, she had a "trashy" wedding, then there was that ill-advised television show (I remember people trashing her really bad with how she was portrayed in it). It seems that she was hanging out with "bad girls" like Lindsey and Paris and was photographed flashing her vag and looking stoned or drunk. Then she gained weight and started looking really unkept. There was some performance she did where you could see the tracks in her hair and her outfit didn't fit and was unflattering on her. There were photos of her smoking with her kid and putting her toddler in the front seat while driving (I think she lost custody for awhile). Then of course the infamous shaved head and umbrella attack.

I'm sure a Britney fan can correct me on any mistakes I made in this post, but I just remember her going from one of the sexiest, most famous women in America (whom every pop girl was compared to) to suddenly being tabloid fodder. And it became steadily worse and worse until it reached a point where people thought she was going to kill herself.

Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."

exactly. still to this day, britney will be the standard pop star mold. whether that's good or bad, it's certainly commendable.

Absolutely not. You don't have an insane meltdown like that and stay well respected outside of a small group. The gay community and girls who grew up in the late 90's to early 2000's are the most who still hold her in high regard. A good portion of of people think she is talentless due to all the years of lip syncing and washed up now.

She could pull off a true comeback as she matures - but I'm afraid she just doesn't have the talent necessary for it. No shade intended, she just was never known for her live vocals, song writing ability, artistic craft, etc. The problem is she was a vessel for other peoples work, she was a pretty face who could dance and lip sync like an angel. She was grat at what she did - but she was always the puppet, never the puppeteer. Seriously though, no disrespect to her though - she had to work her ass off to stay where she was and that was not easy, she deserves credit for that and it's no wonder she had a meltdown.

if her current audience is so abysmal then why is POM relatively a success?

are you guys forgetting how even taylor swift is inspired by the iconic toxic music video?

i'm not saying that influential=respected but there certainly is a correlation between influence and respect.

She went through a lot and managed to bounce back from everything. She genuinely seems like a very nice person to me, what's not to respect?

Why whould she be respected in music industry? For what exactly? I would say if she's respected, it comes from gp more likely.

Sugar, spice, and everything nice.

She is less respected because of gimmicks like lip-sync, not because of the meltdown and whatnot, at least outside of the fan/stan world.

I don't know how to feel about her. On one hand, I like her and she has some fantastic bops. On the other hand, I don't, because she looks like that popular dumb blonde bitch on high school.

it wasn't laaaahv
