Sony weighs in on Kesha and Dr. Luke's contract

Kesha's net worth is estimated $40 million and dr.luke and sony supposedly invested $60 million in her career, they should negotiate to give luke $30 million that's half of the investment. I know that sounds ridiculous especially if he did assault her but this whole thing on holding Kesha seems to be driven by money and how much she "owes" them. idk just a thought.

That kinda obvious since she's signed to his label not to Sony.

Is like Gaga with Interscope, they have control over her albums and singles releases, Gaga has freedom with them, yeah, but not in full freedom

Exactly, thats why Kesha wants out. If she records music that Dr Luke doesn't think will make him a quick buck he will halt the release until she remakes it.

Right,  I see,  thank you :). The contract is apparently worth 60/70m I read?  But how much of that is even an upfront investment and the amount she has earned in sales it mustn't be that substantial?

Luke would appear to not want to work with Kesha,  like I just don't see why these three parties cannot end this simply and let the poor girl just go.  :saladga:

Yeah i know its a mess and idk why any music from her would sell now anyway :saladga:. Idgi

Just. Let. Her. GO!!! :wtf:

My gosh, they all don't want to do anything with each other and I'm sure if Dr. Luke wants a hit, he can just invest into Becky G or some other basic person.

I'm sure at this point, Dr. Luke is probably shook by all the pop stars standing together. So maybe he'll let Kesha do what she wants? :ohno:

Dr. Luke would still earn money from Kesha's music but at least she doesn't have to work with him tbh.

UGH once again it says she can RECORD. Obviously she can do that. You can't legally stop someone from creating, that's impossible. But it doesn't mean that Luke or Sony would ever give her the go ahead to release it and you know for damn sure if Luke wasn't getting those writing/producing royalties the music would not be promoted.

Why didn't Luke just let her go two years ago before this came to widespread attention? My guess is that now he feels his pride and reputation is on the line so he doesn't want to lose to protect his own image. The only thing keeping Kesha in this contract is his greed. There's simply no other explanation, no matter how many times he says he's guilty, why he would so badly want her to stay in that deal. Greed and money.

inb4 the Pope speaks about this issue too, as he spoke about Trump's controversial speech.

they sound so heartless and unsympathetic, if your going to release a comment in a heartbreaking situation like this at least show some sympathy.

and this > "Sony is not in a position to terminate the contractual relationship between Luke and Kesha" but didn't they have their lawyers aiding Luke in court. So you can't say your in no position to terminate the contractual agreement when you are spending money to secure it.....:saladga:

They probs made a statement because their terrified that Gaga puts them on blast at the academy awards.

I think that is a fake inflated rate, because it doesn't factor in amount of financial damages that Sony/ Lukes label will incur from this whole ordeal.

Some can argue that Dr. Lukes Label will go bankrupt if they hold kesha to her contract against her will because the public will stop supporting Lukes label (which is already happening). The financial losses from keeping Kesha's contract out weigh the financial gains, Therefore the contract becomes worthless. If a good financial and economic analyst presented this to judge they might rule her contact value to be $0.

The  judge said it would cause immense financial damage to sony to release her from the contract, but now kesha's lawyers can go back and say well keeping her in contract is cause immense damage to sony through public backlash.

Ooh, Sony is kind of laying the blame at Dr. Luke, not supporting him in this news release.  My, are they trying to do damage control with the #FreeKesha gaining support of big artists.  Keep the pressure on.

"Sony is speaking for the first time since a judge ruled singer Kesha could not be let out of her contract with the label. In a statement released on Wednesday, they revealed they do not have the authority to release the singer from her agreement because she is signed with Dr. Luke's company, Kasz Money. And through that company she is signed with a subsidiary of Sony, Kemosabe Records - which is also owned by Dr. Luke.

'Sony has made it possible for Kesha to record without any connection, involvement or interaction with Luke whatsoever, but Sony is not in a position to terminate the contractual relationship between Luke and Kesha,' Scott A. Edelman, a lawyer for the company, told The New York Times.  'Sony is doing everything it can to support the artist in these circumstances, but is legally unable to terminate the contract to which it is not a party.'

Only Dr. Luke, the man Kesha alleges raped and drugged her when she was 18, has the power to terminate her contract.

Sony released this statement the day before a protest was planned outside their Madison Avenue offices in New York City by Kesha supporters.

Kesha commented on the case Wednesday, saying in a letter to fans; 'All I ever wanted was to be able to make music without being afraid, scared, or abused. This case has never been about a renegotiation of my record contract – it was never about getting a bigger, or a better deal.

'This is about being free from my abuser. I would be willing to work with Sony if they do the right thing and break all ties that bind me to my abuser.'

Shortly after she posted this message Adele acknowledged her legal troubles while picking up one of her four Brit Awards in London, choking up as she said; 'And I would like to take this moment to publicly support Kesha.'

Adele is currently the biggest and most profitable artist signed to Sony.

Taylor Swift has donated $250,000 to Kesha while Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, Miley Cyrus, Fiona Apple and Ariana Grande are among hundreds who have posted messages on Instagram and Twitter to the fast-growing #FreeKesha campaign

Kesha filed a suit against Dr. Luke in Los Angeles in October 2014 alleging he had drugged her with a 'sober pill' and raped her shortly after her 18th birthday in California and threatened to take away her publishing rights.

In their countersuit filed last year, Sony actually compared Kesha to Adele, saying that the singer could have a comeback and become just as big as the British chanteuse, adding they had invested $11million into her career and she had collected $3million in royalties during her time at Sony.

Kesha responded to this at the time by saying; 'I love Adele, and this has nothing to do with her or any other artist** I never wanted to have a "comeback" because I never wanted to go away.

'Making these comparisons is Sonys way of trying to put a positive spin on a horribly abusive situation they are supporting.'  Dr. Luke meanwhile claims that not only did he not rape Kesha, but that the two never even had sex.  Court documents seen exclusively by Daily Mail Online, filed in October 2014, chronicles a decade of abuse and exploitation so complete that it left Kesha 'broken, damaged and traumatized.'  She 'lived in a prison of abuse, suffering a psychological and physical fallout so severe as to be described as 'life-threatening', requiring her to check into rehab.

She broke down in court after hearing the judge's ruling on Friday before sending out a message to her fans thanking them for the outpouring of support.Earlier this week a 2011 video emerged showing the pop star saying under oath that producer Dr Luke never drugged her or made 'sexual advances.'
