It was hilarious. ****ing with people's taste of who you are and what you stand for was his essence. and about Lorde... Life On Mars is the anti-Bowie song. it's melodrama. a parody. (since you liked that word). if you're doing one song, Life On Mars is like the worst choice. Bowie spent most of his life trying to sound optimistic about Life On Earth, since he thought he had suffered enough as a teenager who always felt left out. it's the whole alien(ation) theme. he fell to earth from his tragic youth. he also resented his thin white duke persona (the alter ego Lorde chose to adopt) and felt shame for the person he was during that time, so yeah... if anyone ****ed up, it was Lorde. it's all a case of people being boring. doesn't matter if you're a Bowie fan or not. I never said she should perform Life On Mars. Hell I've been dreaming of her covering Lady Grinning Soul on the piano but it wouldn't be a tribute. Everything felt crammed together in her tribute. The setlist wasn't the problem even though less is more. The problem for me was how embarrassing and cringeworthy the performance was. You can post countless numbers of reviews praising it and it wouldn't change my opinion on the performance. It's not that I'm boring it just wasn't my taste. SISTERV 3,887
I actually felt like Gaga did come off a bit Vegas. But Lorde felt very karaoke/American Idolish. No matter what....no one could have perfectly nailed David Bowie. He's far too unique and any tribute comes off tacky because quite frankly it was something only he could pull off. I'm sure there are things that Gaga can do that Bowie couldn't. A tribute is meant to show respect. Gaga played on fashion/tech. Lorde played on ambience and simplicity. There is no way a single artist could encapsulate David Bowie in 6 minutes. Impossible. He changed sonically and visually easily 50 times in his career. I do hope when Madonna dies that the VMAs gives her a SOLID twenty minute tribute. She is another artist you just can't envision in 6 minutes. Too many eras, themes, evolutions, iconic moments. Sister 9,907
I do not appreciate Lorde at all, so I would purposely disagree with this, it is all biased, you see. This fight is absurd anyway, who loves Bowie most, everyone??!! It's so American Pop Culture, to me. Same thing sort of happened for awhile with Nirvana, after Cobain passed. The future's uncertain and the end is always near.
Wolf 1,328
NME is wack And how is everything about gaga, when she actually said that her entire career is basically a Bowie tribute??

Frankenztein 1,172
Yeah because the best way to honor a great artist who has passed is to start rivalry between two women who both gave their best heartfelt tributes. NME ( and anyone who falls for this kind of idiocy) should feel proud that they reduced two performances in the memory of David Bowie to a petty media game. giskardsb 12,565
Lorde did exactly what was expected. Gaga brought something of herself and showed Bowies influence on her during her performance. I'm not convinced there is any reason to believe that Bowie would have preferred Lordes version. If Gaga did that it would have just seemed like the other 4 tributes done that night.
Neight Shayde 7,925
well the grammys did ignore david bowie's efforts before so i can see why most of david bowie's bandmates prefer the brits. but why does it have to be a competition? WHY? IT'S A FREAKING TRIBUTE! both did what they thought was right, and i believe that david would appreciate both tributes bc he was both subtle and over the top before. Kabexuela 1,184
Lorde's performance lacked emotion and wasn't entertaining. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Lorde. Gaga's was more celebratory and full of emotion.
Anderson123 38,293
I actually liked this a lot more. I love Gaga, but she's always been quiet about her admiration for him, and even when he died, I thought she'd stay quiet. The night they announced she'd pay tribute to him I was like eh? I don't know how this is going to be. I mean, Gaga did it in her own way but it was too much "Lady Gaga pays tribute to Bowie" instead of actually being about him. Gaga always wants to do way too many things at once and it's saturated. So I enjoyed this more.
Swan Heart 7,382
Comparing seems disrespectful right now. To Bowie. They both payed respect to a death legend, a blackstar and the media is turning it to a fake cat fight. Ignorant as awlays. They say it's the last song. They don't know us, you see. It's only the last song if we let it be.
