brizoda 3,856
NME never liked pop music. they only praise pop music when hipsters like some project or artist (eg Disclosure, Haim, Shamir, Jamie xx ,Kanye West, Jack Garratt , etc)

On some Bowie boards I went on, many used that word comparing the Brits tribute to Gaga's show, which many thought was like a cheesy Vegas show, and not like David at all. I thought the beginning was promising and very dramatic with the Intel on her face and her vocals were stunningly on point doing Space Oddity. I loved that part. The keyboard thing where it was bouncing around was very cheesy and too busy. Her twirls were bizarre. Her vocals at times were like mimicry, not her singing, and it was too low for her. And her dancers at times were just too busy also. A lot going on on stage, which I didn't feel that serviced Bowie's songs properly. But she could have pulled it all back together by the end if she just would have slowed it all down and done a stunning rendition of Heroes. That song only calls for the person standing there singing their ass off. And she's doing a cheesy rendition and twirling again. She could have brought it home doing Heroes right. Her heart was in the right place, but watching it again, she was way off base in so many ways. And I felt no emotion with so many snippets with her never getting into them nor able to show off her vocals. It felt forced, but she was giving it her all. I give her that. You explained everything how I feel about that performance. Too much was going on. It definitely had that Vegas vibe. I cringed so much throughout the performance especially the embarrassing twirls and dancers I actually got more of a MJ and Prince vibe from her moves in the performance but at least she did or tried to give it her all. Battle 4 Ur Life 6,714
NME sucks ballz...their kind of music journalism is being proven worthless every single day...they're just a bunch of sad hipsters who think they're tastemakers or some relevant s*... but to take such an offensive, uninspired and pressed article and post it on a Gaga's fan forum as a "fact" and say "I told you so" it's just...(pick an adjective). *waits for the sad to come for me and be ignored cause I have no time for basics. “Fantastic, chic, freak, slay.”

She didn't need Bowie's face behind her. There had just been a medley of songs with Bowie clips from all his eras with his own band playing and then her walking out and performing with his band one song. It was one performance as far as a tribute to Bowie, not two separate tributes. His face was a prominent feature in that tribute. Gaga's had no Bowie images. I thought Gaga projected Bowie's face up there at the end? Other than that his face wasn't there, but the Bowie imagery was strong. His clothes, his vocals (to the best of her ability, of course ), his dance moves, makeup, etc. Throughout the whole show Gaga tried to make sure there was some aspect of Bowie on the stage. That being said, I think she pushed with that a little too much and it did come off more like a Vegas tribute. Agreed that she didn't need his face behind her. I'm just a little bothered by people who are saying that Gaga made it "all about GAGA instead of BOWIE" who then turn around and praise Lorde's when in reality neither of them made it any more or less about Bowie than the other. Maybe it had to do with the images she was creating with intel rings? I find it sad that she had to point this out, for example... It shows that people close to Bowie support and like Lorde, which is important if you are tributing someone. 2. Lorde being stripped down was better and keeping it simple does help to create a more seamless show. 3. Subtle is not bad, nor is in-your-face. Fact is, Bowie was not necessarily subtle. Comparing the performances to make one better or worse than the other in terms of subtly is like comparing apples to oranges- both honored Bowie appropriately, albeit in different ways. You could criticize Gaga for being too haphazard, you could criticize Lorde for not replicating enough of Bowie's energy. 4. Bowie's spoken stamp of approval for Lorde is amazing. I'm still bummed he never openly praised Gaga, and him praising Lorde but not Gaga does raise a red flag. 5. This criticism is freaking bogus, bogus. Gaga made the performance about "herself" yet Lorde's performance was the one that featured Lorde's face on huge screens with barely any other imagery to look at other than Lorde herself. Gaga tried her best to bring Bowie himself back to the stage to honor him, Lorde chose to sing a song in more of a mourning fashion. I don't think Lorde made it about herself more than Bowie, but you'd have to be really against Gaga to say that Lorde's was better because it was "actually about Bowie." It was no more or less about Bowie than Gaga's was. Lorde's was about mourning his death, Gaga's was about celebrating his life. Both are essential and wonderful. I love your opinions. They are always well thought out and beautifly stated.
