She made a marketing deal with Samsung who agreed to purchase her music so that they could offer free downloads. It's just a smart marketing move and with the way records are selling these days it's not such a dumb move either, if artists are not going to be able to make much money from selling albums then this is a great idea on how to profit from an album.

I mean great, she made money from people downloading her album for free. With torrents people would have downloaded it for free anyway and she wouldn't have made a dime.

Who is the loser in this situation? Her fans get to download her album for free in a legitimate way with guaranteed sound quality and no risk of viruses or fake files and Rihanna doesn't lose a million sales from pirates stealing her music.

You can't get pressed because an artist found an innovative way to make money from their music. If anything this should become norm, it could really help the music industry.

At the end of the day it's the music business, and to the credit of Rihanna/Roc Nation they have found a way to make money in a way that is beneficial to both themselves and their consumers. The music world must be the only place where consumers would complain that they are getting access to a product for free.

this was done, so the album can look like a success.

The money that were used to buy 1M copies, were already for Rihanna, remember the 30M deal ? Those money were already in the hands of Roc Nation.  You are the one who doesn't understand it.

No I understand perfectly :smh:

I am aware of everything you just said and it doesn't make a dent in anything I have said.

Roc Nation made less money by having bought 1M copies, cuz they used the money from SAMSUNG. They could've just kept the money. Of course they can't, but what you said "They found a way to make money " doesn't apply here. They didn't make any NEW money.

They used the budget for the whole era, provided by Samsung, to make the album look successful, by buying more than a million copies.

I think this just undermines the point in platinum certifications :awkney:

:smh: No that's just a bizzare framing... Samsung covered the costs....

The album wasn't going to sell 1million in a day or whatever it has managed if it was full price. Instead Rihanna/Roc Nation got the 25/30 million they WOULD have received if they did sell that much by making a deal with Samsung and letting consumers get an album for free.

The entire deal was based upon the fact that if you did that Samsung Anti-Diary thing you would get a code and use that code to get a free download of the album. Rihanna and her team got the same amount of money they would have gotten if 1 million people bought the album at full price.

It was a smart marketing ploy that benefited both Rihanna/Roc Nation and the consumer. Rihanna and Roc Nation benefited from the deal through Samsung money and consumers and fans got to download the album for free because the costs of that where covered.

This is a slap in a face for everyone who worked hard to achieve legit platinum certification. Just saying, doesn't matter if it's Rihanna

You guys do know that RIAA stands for Recording Industry Association of America?

Samsung bought 1 million copies that only count for the US market.

Also, Samsung bought the 1M copies before its release. So why Rihanna is thanking her navy for the certification, instead of Samsung is beyond me.

The New York Post reports that Rihanna has inked a $25 million deal with electronics conglomerate Samsung, who will sponsor her upcoming album and tour.

So basically if ANTi sold 1.1M on its OWN, they'd have more money. The samsung deal was like Beyonce's PEPSI deal. They sponsor the whole album campaign + music videos and tour.

They used money from that BUDGET for the whole era, to buy 1M copies.

What is so hard for you to understand ? They could've used those money instead for music videos, the tour and so on. Now they'll still have to pay for music videos and such. but at least the album will look a success.

Also isn't it that a song/album bought by one person (entity?) equals 1 no matter how many copies were bought by that person/it?

No, you can buy a few copies from the same retailer and it will still count towards Billboard.

But buying like 50 copies (I'm not sure what the exact number is) from the same retailer would be seen as chart-rigging and wouldn't count towards Billboard.

So even if Billboard wouldn't have a problem with the fact that it was given out for free, they wouldn't count it because it has been bought 1 million times by the same "person".

:rip: You are clearly ignoring the fact that it straight out says "Samsung, who will sponsor her upcoming album and tour".

http://www.ibtimes.com/why-rihanna-made-anti-available-free-tidal-2284229

Rihanna has still made more money on this album then she would have if she didn't make the deal and sold the album at full price.

If Rihanna didn't make the deal with Samsung let's just be super generous and imagine that in ONE DAY Rihanna sold 200, 000 units. She has made less money. Instead she teamed up with Samsung they covered the costs of these free downloads and she gives the consumers the ability to download the album for free. It's a win for her team and the consumers.

Plus, since she is a co-owner of Tidal and is luring in new members with this deal, she is making a long term investment in a company that she co-owns.

She didn't blow her entire f*cking budget on this, if you believe that then this is just beyond conversation. I suppose when her tour rolls out and when we see her music video for Work and other singles roll out then you will be proven wrong. We know she has already been filming for Work and she already has already been selling tickets to the ANTI World Tour which starts next month.

"If prior tour sales and dominant album successes over the years are any indication for how the upcoming year may turn out, Rihanna may be on track to have one of the most popular tours of 2016.  Last week, the eight-time Grammy winner announced a major North American trek, “The Anti-World Tour” that is set to launch on February 26 at the Viejas Arena in San Diego.  All 36 dates in North America will feature 23-year old Travi$ Scott as an opener.  The North American dates will wrap on May 7 in Oakland, and then the tour will head overseas on June 11 for a run of dates with Big Sean and The Weeknd.

Tickets to see Rihanna were released in a presale for American Express Card members on November 30, and the general on-sale tickets will be released December 3 at 10:00 AM PST.  Ticket demand is already massive for her 2016 dates, as secondary market tickets are already averaging $227 across the map, according to data provided by TiqIQ.   As it stands, Rihanna is on track to play some super pricey shows in the U.S., as all but seven scheduled dates are averaging above the $200 price mark on the secondary market."
