A forgotten mess: How Applause lost the top of BB because of a wrong choice

That week Gaga was the first person to ever perform at the new Youtube Music Awards, a performance that would get promoted from youtube like crazy, it was literarly forced at youtube users. 

The current single of ARTPOP back then was Applause, the song had already spend many weeks at the top 10 and the previous week it was at #9, unwilling to decrease. Yet Gaga's team (or Gaga wdk) chose to perform Dope and not Applause at the awards that week. Dope got a HUGE increase in streaming that week as it peaked the Youtube views chart and the sales got a big boost as well as the song sold 35k copies that week. So Dope that was in the top 800-1200 of itunes jumped at top 40 and it also jumped at the top of the most viewsed videos of youtube for that week. The song made it at the #8 of BB out of nowhere and Applause fell at #10 (because of Dope) making Gaga having two top 10's in the same week in the BB chart. 

Slay you will say. Well no!

If that week Gaga had performed Applause and not Dope the song would have had a big increase in sales and a tromendous increase in streaming which would not only rocket it on the top 2 of BB (it had serious chances even for the #1 as the #1 that week was Blured Lines at it's very final week) bit would also give the song much more exposure and a new audience. All that would lead at more airplay as well and Applause would have ended as a very big hit and not just a simple hit that it's no. Furthermore ARTPOP would truly have a chance to claimed what it deserved back then even with all the mess. Even if Gaga had performed DWUW instead of Dope, the song that was at the top 30 that week would have hit the top 5 of BB and would have had chances to become much bigger than it ended becoming.

I am not saying all these to shade Dope of course, it's one of my favorites on the album and I don't intend to create negativity. I just wanna point out that people create theories about how Gaga could have obtained a #1 with ARTPOP but the truth is that she threw the #1 away, it was in her grasp. It is just so sad that even Applause, the lead single of ARTPOP never got half of the treatment it deserved from Gaga's team when it comes to promotion. The song was fighting alone, it refused to die and Gaga's team was shooting it with a rifle.  Hopefully things will be different from now on.

Edit: And it's funny how we sometimes claim that ARTPOP has no sure hits but Applause, DWUW and Gypsy were all hits that refused to perform badly and with good promo could have all become huge.Three granted hits on ARTPOP with good promotion and they failed to give any of them them justice.After all these I refuse that the music was the problem.

She could have done loads of things differently but that's hindsight really. 

Oh and it's definitely not forgotten on this forum.  Katy still has to sleep with the lights on...

We were lucky that we even got a performance at all. You can really see her emotion in it.

you do make a good point but it would hurt to see her peform that happy upbeat song when she was a total wreck from the manager split

I remember very well but still it was a bad choice, the current single that was showing potential was the obvious choice. She could have even performed the song acoustic like she did in Japan if she was not in the mood to practise and give a performance. I don't wanna sound like I am judging Gagz, it's just that it's one of these decisions is someone's career that are a big WHY?

Well. I dont think she cared for #1s during that time. She threw away two #1 hits, this case and DWUW itself. You can claim the video would be trashy af but coupled with the song it would have easily been a #1 hit.

I always thought it was so awkward how the YouTube Awards were treated like a crazy fun good time and then Gaga decides to sing a sad ballad and cry on-stage. Like *roll my eyes* that was SO out of place and anticlimatic, what was she thinking? She had to perform something upbeat like any of the other 14 songs on ARTPOP would've been a better choice than Dope.. ARTPOP truly the messiest of the messiest. Rest in peace sis.

 

ALSO, I'll never forget how she never released the Venus music video.

I'd rather have another Top Ten than it creeping to the number 2/1 spot because of some one off performance. If it weren't for this ARTPOP would have only one top ten which would be even crazier. 

I think it would have made more sense for DWUW to have been played at the YouTube event. That song would have been the big hit of the era. It would have beaten out Applause,too sending the singles toward an upward projectory. Meaning...even GUY might have had the chance to be bigger.
