I don't know what it's like to be black and be oppressed, but my polish family was murdered during WW2 for being polish...my Italian family faced sever racism when they came to Chicago in the early 20s and 30s. So to say only black people are oppressed..

but they were never discriminated for the colour of their skin.

None of you can point out why she is wrong because she isn't wrong.

Can you imagine "The first annual white man awards"?

I believe that event is called The Oscars 2016

What is this DISGUSTING color blind rhetoric being thrown everywhere :wtf:

People need to stop acting as if your "opinions" just exist in a vacuum of "all is fair and good and innocent" or "this is just rational; it's common sense!" when most of the ones here actually FUNDAMENTALLY misunderstand the issue in the first place, like what :duck:

Like seriously, LISTEN to People of Color and their experiences before you hold your ill-informed opinions as sacrosanct :smh:

(Also, obviously some black people and people of color HAVE internalized racist beliefs or they themselves don't understand issues that affect MOST black people. Privilege is intersectional. There are rich, black republicans but it doesnt mean that Republicans dont tend to put black people down economically with their policies and that they aren't oppressed :laughga: )

Anyway back on topic more directly, She's wrong. Compartmentalization is alright. Its not "segregation" ( :smh: ) to have a separate month to talk about Black History, its a reaction to the fact that "White History Month" is all year round (including during Black History Month) and that currently black history IS severely ignored. This in no way is "Segregation", its a specific, focused approach to solving an issue of perception in many parts of the world. Ideally, we would study black history as a general part of history, and history would not be so biased towards white people, but getting rid of black history month only hurts the progress.

Besides, its already a bastardized, typically watered down representation anyway :smh: Black History is SO much more than "slavery, then the civil rights movement and now there's no racism! /s " :air:  Im ill-informed as to what people in Europe and Asia learn about Black history tbh too, I only know the American version :emma:

A lot of talk but you aren't really saying anything meaningful.

What is black history other than slavery, segregation, and the civil rights movement?

Why separate that from American history in general?

Why are you implying that they deserve special recognition?

polish isn't a race, it's an ethnic group :saladga:

polish, Italians are still white people who benefit from white privilege. All ethnic groups have been discriminated against at some point in time, the point being that black people still suffer that same discrimination today because of the colour of their skin, regardless if they're black from France, Italy, America, Nigeria, South Africa, Australia.

Yes, all non black Latino Asian races are classified as white. I actually get offended when I'm called white because I'm not, in my eyes.

Yes, all ethnic groups are discriminated against, some more than others. If you think some polish and Italian groups aren't discriminated against then you certainly haven't experienced it first hand (which I have, believe it or not).

I'm not entirely sure what your argument is? Only blacks are still discriminated against today?

all people of colour face racism but white people do not. If you have white skin and have European ancestry then yes you are white whether that's how you define yourself or not

so racism and discrimination are not the same

White people do too... at least here in America. White people are mocked and made fun of almost daily for their enjoyments or activities. Some people call it "reverse racism" but it's still the same thing.

And while technically yes, someone might consider me "white" I'm not, I'm ethnic.

but how did this have a systematic impact apart from being a one off massacre of people? also the article states they were massacred more for what they were doing to the Haitians rather than off the basis of where they came from/ the colour of their skin

Are you ignorant? All races,  including white people,  face racism. Pick up a book and read a little bit of history,  not selectively.  I've read awful things about white people on these forums recently all in the name of racial equality.

yes, especially children.
