Can someone explain to me why people in this thread think it's a bad idea to give a black child, who sits in a classroom all day learning about white men and what they did for America while only ever hearing about other black people through tragic events such a slavery, a month dedicated to people like him and the positive contributions they made to society that no one ever gets to here about because in America, white men are best.

What is black history other than slavery, segregation, and the civil rights movement?

First of all, not all black people are the descendants of slaves and not all black people are Americans (When I hear "civil rights movement" I think specifically of America, don't most people?) So already the approach is too narrow...
Part of my criticism was of the fact that Black History Month as it currently stands or is actually TAUGHT in education is pretty much a reductive form of even the main topics it discusses (pre-slavery - post slavery issues) that still finds a way to wrongfully represent what "racism" is (by leaving out how wide of a term it is, people internalize that only major attrocities or blatant slurs, etc. are "real racism" etc, which is a large detriment to combating it  ) My job is not to sit here and educate you, and the fact that this question is SERIOUSLY what some people believe "Black people history" is is really a testament to the fact that our current way of talking about the history of black people is lacking.

I thought this part was pretty much explained  It shouldn't be, as its an integral part of our history. The problem is that people (generally white people in power) don't want to teach about it because it paints America badly, and even modern curriculum for young ages (when it matters especially  ) paints the plight of Black people with a very rosy brush to lessen the blow. It tends to go over a few hot topics as they come up but overall misses the finer details and leaves a memorable, but weak impression. Black History Month is more about FOCUSING these topics and giving more information in terms of education.. (Also, not everywhere does it? Like, during Black History Month where I went to school, nothing was done about it at all, lol. My dad is a bit of an African-American scholar at times though, so I never went uneducated~)

I'm not gonna take this at face value, as I have trouble believing someone could think that the History of Black people doesn't deserve any special recognition

It's only "special" recognition in the sense that they are severely LACKING in actual recognition. It's honestly not even as far as positive discrimination, its literally just focusing on an issue that is lacking, as that is how change happens. Treating everything and everyone as equals is all kinds of misguided and ignores the actual reality - which is that people and things are NOT equal, and certain groups of people NEED "special recognition" to be even on the same footing as others. This isn't even a black-white issue, its a hierarchical one which is systemic and applies to many groups of people

First of all, black history in the USA is that of the USA alone. Don't include anything else. It's irrelevant.

If you're implying that black history is receiving special "rosy" treatment then by god you know nothing about history at all. That's simply how it's written in general, especially in education. You don't teach kids the bloody part of history, and you most certainly don't overload it with details when trying to teach it to everyday people. 

Once again you're also implying that history that pertains to black people deserves special recognition. Why? Why should it if equality is in question? To be quite honest, I think this is simply another note in the "white guilt" that's been engrossing the USA. Sure black people (and other minorities) still get ****ed over here and there but if you're actually also implying that most of their problems stem from racism then you need to sit the **** down.

Considering I learned more about black and latino history in the USA than actual "white" history in textbooks we used in LEBANON then you also need to sit down cause it's not as bad as you think

i get the vibe that you don't know much about the history of racism against blacks. stop pretending black centric racism thrives only in the US. Almost every language in the world has a word for the N word. Is there a discriminatory word for Italians and polish in Japanese or Chinese? Hating black skin is world wide, polish discrimination isn't relevant outside of your geographic location.

Once again, why are you talking about non-American issues in a discussion regarding a discussion that is specifically about the USA and its history? 

Also, why are you focusing on racism as if that's the only part of black history that merits importance?

Racism is everywhere, and guess what, it's also against "white" people like me.

In fact I'd argue there's a much bigger racial bias against Middle Eastern people than black people worldwide overall.

Why isn't there a Lebanese history month worldwide hmm, considering we're the only reason Britain was discovered as early as it was and as such we are directly responsible for the entire western world as we know it, where Rome takes all the credit.
