Mariah Carey's 90's Singles Performances

These are the week to week performances of Mariah Carey's songs on the Billboard Hot 100 during the 1990's.

-I want to preface this by saying the the chart structure changed a lot during the 90's. There was a complete overhaul of the chart for the 1992 Billboard year. That's why Mariah's first two albums looked like they performed badly. Songs used to not stay on the chart for as long as the do now, making their top 10 stays short as well. Mariah's singles from her first album are some of her biggest hits as stated by Billboard, so they've obviously found a way to adjust numbers to find a way to compare songs from different charting eras.

-There were three very strong female eras going on in 1995/1996, they included Mariah's Daydream, Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill, and Celine Dion's Falling into You.

-For Mariah's Butterfly era, five singles were released but only two were allowed to chart because of new chart rules and issues between Mariah and her record label (i couldn't really understood the situation, so if someone knows please share).

-Ive added a new portion to this to show female (or male) singers' biggest competition on the charts during each era, from their respective gender. Sometimes there are clear competitors and sometimes there are many with less powerful performances. They are listed below. I was surprised to see that Madonna was never a competitor (aside from a bit of overlap during the Butterfly and Ray of Light eras) for Mariah in the 90's. They either had opposite era cycles or Madonna's singles weren't performing well.

Mariah Carey
Janet Jackson
Whitney Houston

Emotions
Paula Abdul
Vanessa Williams

She was able to mix being classically and vocally talented like Adele while also being edgy and cool like Rihanna. It worked well for her.

she's the only one to have 8 songs chart in the decade end chart:neyde:

Can't Let Go stalled at #2 because her label retracted the CDs from stores in order to boost the album sales:neyde:

Had ABMB and My All debuted at #1, she would've set the record for most consecutive #1 debuts:neyde:

Forever had enough airplay to make a #1 debut:neyde:

About Butterfly, Tommy didn't let her release Butterfly and Breakdown because they were about him:neyde:

Butterfly was another lost #1, and Breakdown actually outpeaked Honey and My All in some countries without promo:neyde:

AIWFCIY could've gone #1:neyde:

same for Endless Love:neyde:

When You believe's CDs were retracted to boost Mariah, Whitney and the Soundtracks' album sales:neyde:

also, you didn't put Heartbreaker in the OP:neyde:

she barely promoted outside US/Japan:neyde:

I put it in my 21st century Mariah thread because the Rainbow era seemed heavier on the 2000 side of things and i didn't want split eras up, they need their family lolol

Also: GREAT info! thanks for sharing

This SLAYAGE.

Butterfly deserved more, tho. The three other singles (the title track, "The Roof," and "Breakdown") were KILLER.

I'm not a woman. I'm not a man. I am something that you'll never understand.
