Better Day 5,766
Ed Miliband was not judged to be as strong a leader as David Cameron, an internal Labour report into why the party lost the 2015 election has found. The report, overseen by former Cabinet minister Dame Margaret Beckett, said the comparative standing of the two men was one of four reasons for the defeat. Other factors identified were failures in economic and immigration policy and the fear of the SNP propping up Labour. The report said Labour faced a "huge challenge" to win again in 2020. The report concludes that the party needs a massive upswing in its fortunes in England and Scotland if it is to be returned to power in five years time. It urges the party to do more to appeal to older voters and to construct a clear "policy narrative" that can be sold to the public. 'Lack of connection' The report concluded that Labour's "ground campaign" during the election was strong but suggests many voters had already made their minds up and opinion polls suggesting it was neck and neck with the Conservatives were wrong. Pollsters and activists on the doorstep consistently heard four things that could explain the party's performance, which saw it lose ground in key marginal seats in England and found itself all but wiped out in Scotland. They were: ■ Ed Miliband wasn't judged to be as strong a leader as David Cameron ■ A failure to shake off "the myth" that Labour was responsible for the financial crash and failure to build trust on the economy ■ An inability to deal with the issues of "connection" and, in particular, failing to convince on benefits and immigration ■ The fear of the SNP "propping up" a minority Labour government On the issue of leadership, the report argues that Mr Miliband enjoyed a "surge" in 2015 and performed well during the campaign itself. But it says he was unable to shift public perceptions, borne out in opinion polls, that David Cameron was regarded as more "prime ministerial". "Over the period 2010-15, what the polls did consistently show was that, when asked if 'this man could be prime minister', David Cameron was rated above Ed Miliband. Since he actually was prime minister, this response was perhaps less than surprising. "It is the fate of every Labour leader of the opposition to be the target of ferocious attack from partisans sections of the media," it added. "However, Ed Miliband faced an exceptionally vitriolic and personal attack." gagzus 22,918
I think it's foolish for this country to be ran by anyone other than Labour tbh, I mean i cannot get over the amount of delusional people that voted for conservatives in the south of the country- mostly students from well-off families as well... mess... As for the "failure" on their views on equality, immigration and benefits- labour was the only party who proposed equality, i mean look at Cameron right now, he legit said on national television he wants to deport anyone who comes here and cannot master our language in 2 years- when most people who come here are adults who cannot simply learn an entire language it's impossible to do past a certain age. This country supports racism and idiocy imho, it makes me want to immigrate to another country so bad but then i remember most countries are ran by racists and discriminating dictators nowadays

StrawberryBlond 15,555
I really don't have an opinion on it. Because I have no faith in politicians. I only take an interest in politics when it involves a change to something that'll shake up my way of life (hence being strongly opposed to independence). I only support Labour because it seems like the best option. When it comes to voting, it's not a question of "Who's going to be a great leader and change things?" It's really a case of "They're all going to screw us over...so who's going to screw us over the least." A lot of people voted for Cameron because he seems like the only candidate who's actually got it in him to rule and I 100% understand that. You want someone who can appear like they have their head switched on running your country. Ed Miliband makes me so nervous and Nick Clegg is so...anonymous. Don't have any faith in any of them. Honestly, regardless of what government's in place, I don't notice the difference. If I was alive during Thatcher's reign, I might have seen a difference then. But honestly, everyone I speak to says they don't think anything's been better or worse under any leader after her, just same old same old. Here's the new boss - he's the same as the last boss, etc. And as for Scottish independence, well, why do I get the feeling that if they achieved it, the SNP wouldn't have a clue what to do afterwards? The whole point of the SNP is to achieve independence, so once they've got it, what's next? it's never explained! In the 90's sitcom, 2Point4 Children, the mother is strongly against Thatcher and it's a running joke that whenever anything goes wrong, she finds a way to blame it on her, even if it's completely unrelated. Well, she once said this great rant and it really summed up what I think about politics: "When will politicians realise that all the people of this country want is a government that just leaves everyone alone! That just keeps everything the way it is!" This is exactly what I thought of during the independence debate. What right do these self important fools have to split up this country and throw its people's lives into a tailspin? Isn't life hard enough without the upheaval of having your country break apart and all the downfalls that brings?

Dominic 11,922
Labour need to widen their audience to older people? Typical labour. The only reason they had remained in power previously was because they encouraged and made immigration very attractive therefore securing more Labour votes in time and we all know where we stand on the situation with immigration at the moment. They rely on these tactics to win, it's ridiculous. Cameron was not the ideal candidate but he was the only one who came forward, looking the part, and had an action plan. I'm not Conservative but I hate the view that Labour is our saviour. The hardest thing in this world is to live in it

Actually if you had read the manifesto of each party prior to voting you would see Labour, Lib Dem and Conservative all included several means of advancement in the fight for equality. Particularly LGBT equality which shocked people massively as Conservative have never been as forthcoming with LGBT issues. The problem isn't that delusional people vote conservative, the problem is that delusional people vote. I hate both (I have no hope for British politics) but if you give me an option between Labour and the Tories, give me the Tories. This is coming from someone from the North East, the part of England where EVRYONE votes Labour due to the damage to our industrial heritage by Thatcher during her reign and the fact that the South completely ignores us I am not going to disclose my views because I cannot be bothered with a debate.
