Marriage Equality in Switzerland

I created an account just to reply here because I am so ****ing pissed off.

The CVP/PDC are so clever. They create their initiative for an equal taxation between married couples and non-married ones, which EVERYONE agrees should be a thing, and they sneakily define marriage as a contract "between a man and a woman". Now that law, if accepted by the people, would prevent another future law allowing same-sex marriage to be passed.

I just don't know what to do. I'll make sure to tell absolutely everyone I know to vote no, but with this equal taxation thing everyone's gonna say yes and I feel like we already lost...

This is so sad!!! I was in Switzerland a couple summers ago, and it quickly became my favorite country I had ever been in. It's so well maintained and stunningly beautiful. There's also amazing history everywhere. This is so saddening though. I didn't realize gay marriage wasn't already legal there, and the fact that it could be banned by misinformed and ignorant people in power is terrible. Best wishes Switzerland.

I live in Bern, I'm 19 but I'm actually Portuguese. I could do the Swiss Pass, but then I have to do the military, so I don't even mind not being able to vote :emma:

Ah ok I see ;) I really don't want to do the military service...

Wait, so they're ok with euthanasia but not 2 men getting married? There is not a face Palm powerful enough...

They're ok with 2 men having a registered partnership... But idk why they can't imagine gay mariage and I dont' get why people would want to write in the swiss Constitution that a marriage would only be between a man and a woman... :/

I've seen on internet that 71% of the swiss people would allow same-sex couples to marry and adopt children but I'm only afraid because maybe they'll vote to pay less and they won't think about equality...

I really hope the results are in favor of love and acceptance. :(

Stay strong, OP! Even if they turn down equality now, there's no doubt that equality is where the world is heading. We will all get there one day if we keep supporting the right things.

I hope so! I will stay strong and yes I think like you! I'm sure that one day we'll have the possibility to marry in Switzerland! :) I hope that I'll still be alive haha ;)

Yes! You really explained the situation very well! I'm really scared of what could happen... :/

Yes it's really sad... I hope it won't pass :/ I hope people will inform themself of what could happen and how bad it will be... And I don't see a lot of politicians speaking about what could happen if it's accepted :/ I would love to see people doing that kind of video for Switzerland!

I saw somewhere on the "avançons ensemble" website that they're looking for people to shoot some short movies, so maybe this will be a thing. (http://www.avancons-ensemble.ch)

And apparently nearly all other political parties oppose the initiative, that make me a little more hopeful :)

I'm actually pretty sure that this wont get through. There are so many people who are against it, exactly because of that.

Yep :) every big party, except SVP and CVP, are against it. And even CVP members are quite indifferent about it

I really hope people will think about what's good for our society and vote against that initiative! :)

It already makes me sick... 67% would say yes according to the survey... I can't... How people would say yes to that...

I would be very surprised if a country like Switzerland limited marriages to opposite-sex couples on the basis of conservative traditional values.

Can you elaborate more on the link between economical mechanism and marriages in Switzerland ? Or an article about that might help too.

In Switzerland theres the problem that in some cases, a married couple pays more taxes than an unmarried couple does. Now the christian party in Switzerland wants to get rid of that, which is actually a good thing besides that around 2 billion swiss francs would be missing in the budget.

Now since theyre the Christian party, they try to make marriage a "relationship between man and woman", which would get accepted together with the erasure of unequality concerning the taxes.

So its actually just a fraud.

The article @MrBlue linked also states that those numbers are to take w/ a grain of salt, since those can change drastically as they also did in the past.
